Always surprised at how well things keep in the west. We get so dang much rain and generally damp weather, steel just rots away if left out doors. Heck that old binder still has green paint showing on it. I know the trees are a different deal out in the west, but here that tree would be considered a weed. Norway Maple. They grow very fast, and throw down thousands of seeds, given the chance grow every where. Softwood, so not considered much value for firewood.

A few years ago I was able to clean up a row of parked machinery on a farm I rent. One of the machines, covered in grapevines in the summer, turned out to be a Case pull type combine. All that was left of it was the frame! The sheet metal was literally gone.

In my younger days, I worked with a drag race team. It was illegal to acid dip bodies, also was not cheap to have done. A local speed shop had two car bodies sitting on blocks behind the shop. Totally stripped of paint. Just rusting away, loosing weight. I was always curious how much weight they actually saved doing that.

Me too. I once bought a tractor from an old homestead in Northern Saskatchewan. Equipmemt that had been sitting in a grove for decades was in better shape than if it had been sitting in a shed in Ohio. The tractor we bought had been sitting in a lean to shed for 8 years. There was a spot the size of a football on the fender that the farmers knees had rubbed down to shine metal, didn't have a spec of rust on it. By the time we got 1500 miles home the spot was starting to rust.
