My son has a 4430 that is hard to start in the cold , he says it dosen't turn over very fast . A friend put a gear reduction starter on his 4040 and was amazed at how fast it cranks and starts, my ?? is if they are called gear reduction, ( to me they would spin slower ) or is just a term they use, I have priced these starters and they sell for way less then used starters anybody have any experiance with these cheaper starter (I looked on ebay and amazon ) Thanks Bryan

The gear reduction starter is designed to allow the motor to turn 3 to 8 times faster than a direct drive motor. the idea is like putting a 4.10:1 axle in a car. The engine turns faster for each rear wheel revolution, but the acceleration is dramatically increased. Reduction starters are becoming standard on many vehicles. Permanent magnet motors are also being used as they are more efficient and take advantage of speed and high tech magnets to both go fast and be less weight. Jim

dodge and chrysler have used these starters for years and years, pretty much all of the 60's and 70's. they have a small gear off the armature running a bigger gear on the drive. now a days starters are so small with their permanent magnets, but they seam to work.

FWIW, a customer bought a gear reduction starter from a farm parts supplier for his 4430 and had me install it, along with new batteries.

It SOUNDS like it's cranking fast (because of the it's high-speed motor and gear noise) but I wasn't real impressed that it was actually cranking the engine faster than the OEM Delco.

The battery cables were replaced a year ago with $$$ OEM DEERE cables.

Also, it is leaking a little oil out it's stubby little rubber drain tube, which indicates it either isn't set up for use with a ''wet clutch'' or the seal isn't doing it's job.

This is just a report one ONE starter version, a ''no name'' part from ''The Land of Almost Right'', I'm not saying there may not be better/more impressive units out there.

We have a JD 6000 hiboy sprayer that has the 219 engine in it. The engine had been rebuilt prior to us purchasing the sprayer, so there is good compression on it. After many batteries, having excellent battery cables, and the original starter gone through several times, I had a bait of it not wanting to start without assistance from a set of jumper cables. Upon some suggestions on this forum, I ordered a new gear reduction starter from WAP. It made a new machine out of it and will start no matter how cold now.I think the key to it in my situation was that it does not kill the battery so quickly with a really high Amp draw on the battery trying to spin it over, hence the engine RPMs remain high enough for it to actually start. Just my 1 experience and YMMV.

When the big old Delco starter in my truck with Cummins L10 died again, a year after the local shop rebuilt it with their junk parts, they provided a brand new light weight gear drive Denso. It was so much easier to install, and spins over the engine better than ever. The original gear drive starter in my JD 7410 gave out spring 2022. All they could come up with at the time was a Chinese knock off. It works great.

Always had trouble with the 674 not spinning fast enough to start. New bigger cables and all still not working well. SO finally spent the cash to get a new used starter for it. junkyard one loos like a Gas engine starter with the head for a diesel .Been on there for a few years now with no problems except it wants to grind sometimes before entering the flywheel. Might just be the wear on the ring gear. But sure does start better. Starts at colder temperatures easier.

For years I had trouble starting my Yanmar excavator. Would hardly turn over when cold. Tried different things, finally the starter gave up completely. My trusted local auto electric shop sold me a new gear reduction starter. Best thing that ever happened for that machine. Started every time no more problems.

Fix the battery cables and rebuild that Denso starter. See the link below to my testing of the gear reduction starter on my 4020

On my 30,40 and 50 series Deere i get rid of the 6v batteries and install 31 series heavy truck batteries and make all new cables. When i starter fails i go with a new reduction starter.
