A Blackstone in the foreground. Dating to pre 1900 Blackstone produced a Lamp Start Engine. I would think that that term would be similar to the Flame Licker used by early internal combustion builders. That period would put the right along with Otto in the early development of ICEs. Blackstone was later assumed by Lister who spanned roughly a century of engine production.

I'm fascinated by the castings used in those engine. Since they were almost assuredly lost-wax, it must have been an amazing process.
