Field Marshall, Series 2 from about 1947, quietly popping away, waiting for the Parade to start. When waiting like this, the gentle rocking motion from the single cylinder engine, would send you off to sleep. ;0).

Hi Majorman

Did this Marshall use a cartridge start system? Former owner of where my family are had one and it used to start with a cartridge. He said that the tractor had no turning brakes and it would take half an acre to turn the thing. Thanks for the pics look forward to these each day.

Yes, they were either swung up on the handle, two men could do it easily, one man if he was really strong, or you could use a cartridge. The would work all day on five gallons of diesel so most people just left them ticking over, once going. My fathers employer bought one for me to drive when I was about 12 and I used to cultivate and plough stubble in my Summer holidays and half terms from school. Flat out at 5 mph. No independent brakes but we never had any difficulty manoeuvring, did have dif. lock on a lever under the steering wheel.
