Hey Stan,
That is actually a bearing turned fire starter. The fire extinguisher is the type that you fill with water and pressurize with an air compressor

So, are you saying you had a fire? What was on fire?

I bought 3 of those maybe 1970 or so they are great burning leaves and such. every combine should come with at least one. I keep mine filled and ready from warm to freezing weather. joe

I carry a fire extinguisher just like that, plus a dry small power extinguisher on my mowing tractor. I have used them both. Stan

Smelled smoke on the combine one night. Grabbed the fire extinguisher and headed up to the engine compartment. Some chaff smoldering in a crevice. No open flame but I blasted it with the fire ex and hurried
home. Soused it with the water hose and left it set outside that night far from anything. Still couldn't sleep that night. Kept getting up and looking out window. That was my 750 Massey.

Many times, back when I worked on combines I have found shared burnt chaff around an old bearing,,that didn't ignite to flames and went out,, the owner never knew it,,I would wonder why it never went up in flames..

I have had two of those 2.5 gal water extinguishers for over forty years. Compared to one of these a 20BC dry powder is worthless against an ordinary combustable fires. They should have an ounce or two of dish detergent added to help penetration. Nearly all of them in use by the fire service have the chemical added.

I was at my neighbors shop a few months back. He had his 1660 apart, replacing the front bearing on the rotor. The bearing was gone and in its place was a bunch of charred chaff. He got very lucky.
