Added LED lights, vehicle radio interference

Posting here because this forum gets a lot of traffic and LEDS could be added to a tractor with a radio. I recently replaced the broken fog lights on my 06 Ram 3500 with LED lights from Amazon. There's a bunch offered so I bought midrange on price. Now I have total radio static on any stations except the very powerful closest ones when the lights are on. Will the plug and play filters fix this or am I out on my purchase.

I have a friend that had the same problem with his Polaris Ranger 1000 XP he bought used. Radio static with the LED headlights previous owner had installed. Replaced them with the original lights and static problem went away. What I wonder is, do all LED lights have this problem? I'd like to put some in the shop, but don't want to loose the FM radio stations.

The filters do work, the RF/EMI interference comes from the LED driver. A plug n play device would be easiest, or you can shop for ferrite cores. You can find the little clip on ferrite sleeves online, around a dozen or so for less than $20. They simply open up like a clam shell then snap closed over the wire, insulation and everything.

Ferrite cores, are usually on power wires, but you can try one on the antenna coax too. If you buy several, install one near each bulb, and then on the radio wires and another on coax cable.

I lived in Florida back in the mid 1980s. At that time, there was a yearly mandatory automobile inspection that was needed to renew your license plates. Among other things, they tested the aiming of the headlights. If they were not aimed properly, you failed the test and had to have a certified mechanic fix the problem and sign off on the repair.

I'm glad you were able to find LED lights for your truck, they are a nice addition. However, I must admit that I have a very hard time driving at night when the LED lights from oncoming vehicles are not properly aimed.

Good luck with the static.

I put the LED Cob light bulbs in my shed/shop. One row in the work area along with three high bay LED lights. No interference. The row of cob bulbs in the storage area immediately cause radio interference on the weaker stations. I guess it may be the size of the bulbs.

I see online that I should've bought lights
that bear the CE mark and have EMI built
in?

If those lights are noisy enough to interfere with FM broadcast, I wouldn't bother trying to fix them with filters. Throw them in the trash.
