Applying fertiliser to a potato crop.

Seems like if he's just going to spread the fertilizer over the top it would be easier to just spread before planting so it would not matter about the rows. I would also think it would do more good if placed by the row in the dirt.

Some fertiliser is put in the row when the seed is planted, I make a monitor for a company who makes the applicator. Some is later spread on top, like this one is doing, just before moulding up takes place, so it all goes into the ground around the plants.

Potatos are mostlybraised in sandy soil so they pick easy and because of that rain washes the fertilizer away. Therefore; they need to apply several times a year. There is a sand plain just south of where I live and they need to fertilize in small amounts 2 or3 times a year even for corn and beans.

Is that a commercially built bag lifter on the forklift? I just put the forks through the loops.

I was very interested in the soil on that field, there was no stone, the soil was what we here would call silt, usually from the sea or river bed in the distant past. You could also push your stiff hand and arm into it nearly up to your elbow, as the farmer demonstrated.

We have similar soils on the Fens and on reclaimed land close to the sea, on the coast.
