tire trouble

28 inch tire 24 years old. Has a split 4, maybe 6 long, parallel with the rim about 1 1/2 from the rim. Leaks off quickly as shown by soapy water. SLIME says it will only work in the tread area. Is there any patch for the split? Would have to go on the inside, seems like. It's tubeless so would putting in a tube work? Patch & tube? Tire looks good inflated but when flat shows a lot of small cracks tho no leaks from the small cracks. Hate to buy a new tire right now if I can get a year or 2 by some kind of fix.

A tube is your only choice, and it will not be cheap.Probably in the 50.00 to 60.00 dollar range(do not buy a cheap made in China tube, the next week you will be back buying a good tube.

Bite the bullet and put a tire on it. Yes you can boot it and then put a tube in it and by the time you finish fooling around with it you will have almost as much tme in it and money as if you just put a tire on it with a new tube. Probably the other one is not far behind in condition.

Until you get the tire dismounted enough that you can look inside, there's no way to know what the remedy is.

If it's through to the inside there's not much you can do. In many cases the outside of the tire is cracked and nasty but the inside carcass looks like new.

Nothing is going to hold together a rotten and split sidewall. A tube will keep air in it so long as the split isn't too bad inside. The tube will push through the split, get pinched, and foof! A boot or a patch will only insulate the tube from the split. They won't hold the split together so if it gets worse...

A tube would certainly work until the crack got so bad it would start pushing the tube through it. May be better off replacing the tires. If you put a tube in it, it might help if you glued a piece of heavy cloth over the area where the crack is. Weldwood original contact cement would hold.

They make rubber boots specifically for that purpose. A tractor tire repair facility should have them in stock.

Around here no one will mess with a tire with a sidewall issue any more.

The tire will flex badly at that spot and will pinch the tube sooner than later. Inner boots can help but the edge of the boot itself adds another spot that can pinch a tube. And the real issue these days is that tubes are poor quality, they cant take the stuffing as they could 30 years ago.....

So they do the patching and it doesnt last and they get called back and they get a bad name for not doing the repair right.... so they just dont mess with sidewall issues any more.

You can try the bandaid fixes, but it might be best to know when to throw in the towel, bite the bullet....

These days just finding the right size tire to put on is a win. Its a new world.

Im waiting on the tire guy to show up to put on a combine tire and 2 tractor tires. If the grass dries up a little I need to take 2 implement tires off the chisel plow and get them replaced. One of those years.
