Home Depot help

I needed to replace my toilet leaking flush valve. I am looking at the valves, lots of choices for around 10.00 to 30.00. I couldn't find my valve. I found the only worker in the plumbing dept. She said she will be right over. Here we go. In a few minutes she shows up. I tried to explain with my best description of the part I needed. She says You have a Kohler toilet valve. and says why don't you just replace the rubber seal on the valve cylinder bottom, and grabs a seal off the shelf, and explains how to take it apart. I was very pleased with her help, and knowledge. Stan

I have to agree with HD help. 95% of the time they are good. Occasionally you get the one that is clueless and maybe some stores are worse than others, but I've had fantastic experiences with the 6 HD I regularly shop at.

I have three kohler toilets, and have had to replace that gasket on two toilets already in only 3 years. It's an easy and cheap fix but the flush valve parts are exclusive to kohler. One thing I hate is not having the ability to raise the water level in the tank, like most new toilets, they do not flush real well. I haven't tried yet but I think the only way would be to raise the height of that flush valve cylinder with a piece of pvc or hose.

That would be a something new around here a Homer depot employee that had a clue of what ya needed . i gave up asking . I thing i know the inventory of our store better and where to find it . Just don't go looking for 1/8th pipe or 1/4 inch pipe , i was told they don't make that any more . And around here good luck on finding it as the last place that had it on hand closed there doors. Here ya have to run to a half dozen places to find what ya need . Before they opened there doors it was NOT a problem , we had three real live hardware store and if one did not have what ya needed they would CALL the other TWO and find ya what ya needed , we had a lumber company that had PRIME wood and a MILL service that would MAKE YOU what ya needed and had been here since the late 1800's . I needed some siding for THIS OLD HOUSE and due to me taking care of my customers i was a little to slow about getting down there to get some ORG siding made for this old house as they still had the old machine that made the siding and the knifes that made it . Quality you do not get at Homer Depot . During the remodel the org ft door dating back to the late 1800's had out lived it's self and no matter how much i tired to fix it she was done for . SOOO after listening to the War Dept complain about the cost of UP GRADING we picked out a new door . Due to the fact i am no Carpenter i asked for help from two of my customers who were and they came to help with all the proper tools for installing a new door . The new Door from Homer Depot was warped worse then the 120 year old door and the fight was on while the new door leaked more COLD air then the OLD door did . After three times of them getting a new door and before they left the store we checked each and every one for Plumb and all were plum junk . After three MONTH of harsh hostel words spoken they did get me a new ft. door that was not warped and NOT from the same door mfg. . The now down side was i had to stain it as one to match was 1500 more . YEp we have had Issues with Homer Depot , like with there line of Rigid Power tools and there life time warranty . We filled out the Warranty papers , sent them in and when it failed they had NO records of it , while on the other hand we had the recites . I had three pad sanders puke the heads , one hitting me in the place a guy does not like being hit and putting me on the floor , next one got me in the stomach , the next one nailed me in the chest. The one i have NOW will not hold sand paper on . My org 12 volt HD drill needs new batterys and oh wait they don't have them anymore. And the other pet peeve i don't get my Mil discount . My drivers license says i am a Purple heart holder , my license plates state i am a Vet and purple Heart holder BUt they say that is not good enough .to get a lousy 10% .

Yup I have TV's experience at home cheapo. Junk with nobody that knows what is what and just a useless store. IF they run them all like that I don't see how they don't go broke except they have run everybody else out of town. So they are all that is left unless I drive a lot of mileage to go elsewhere. Always a hide and seek to find anybody and then they say it's not my department or they are so busy fooling with their phone they can't see you. I hate walking in there for anything even a look around.

A few years back, while trying to finish a remodel on a rental my folks owned, needed some door locks to get it ready for new tenant in less than a week. Went to HD to complete my list and they didn't have enough of the style/color. Went to the service desk to inquire if there were any in the area. Manager heard me asking and came over. She told me they had a load coming from another store on Thursday and could add those to that load. Thrilled me. Paid for the order so I could just pick it up when it arrived. Made my deadline. Now have the manager and her family in church with us.

I spend thousands of dollars at HD every year, and I've found their employees' knowledge varies from clueless to expert. A lot of the folks who work there formerly worked in the trades and decided to go with a steady paycheck and regular hours. Others were hired off the streets and don't know a ball valve from a cinder block.

The other day I picked up a couple of sheets of 1/2 inch BCX plywood. It didn't have a bar code on it, but I guess they use the paint stripes on the ends of the sheet to identify them. So the cashier rings it up and the price is quite a bit higher than it should have been. I looked and she had rung it up as MDF, which it clearly wasn't. I said ''it's plywood, not MDF''. She says ''I'm just going by the markings'', and proceeds to show me how that worked. I pointed on the screen where BCX was listed next to the MDF. She entered the BCX, and the total came up to over $200! Yes, she forgot to take off the two sheets of MDF.

Where is it leaking? In the bottom of the tank at flapper or overflowing down the tube, maybe the bottom of the inlet? If the overflow, there'a adjustment to set the water level. Other things, maybe gaskets or replace parts.

There are two HDs in my area. One is an old and long established store. The other is somewhat newer. The difference in HD stores comes down to the managers and their staff. The newer store is so messed up and mismanaged that I will never set foot into it again. They did me wrong three times, and that is enough.
There are quality issues with some of their stuff. Like lumber. One has to go through nearly a half a stack of 2X4s to find a couple of fairly straight ones.
I go to Lowe's instead.

Lumber .... first off, lumber stored inside is something relatively new, well since places like Home Depot and Lowe's etc showed up. Back in the day, lumber was always outside. Sometimes covered but still outside. Being inside dries it out quicker and the result is warped boards. The biggest reason though is the picking that we all do, and you can't blame a guy for that with today's prices. Why buy a piece of lumber you can't use. The problem of course is that the staff are told to simply pile the rejected stuff back on the pile and that's what we have to fight our way through every visit. Not sure what the solution is.

I needed a curb valve with drain back. I went to HD and asked, they said they would get the plumbing expert. He had never heard of a curb valve. A couple of minutes online and two were on their way. I do like the deal HD has on appliances, 12 months no interest if you pay it off in the 12 months. It helps when a major appliance fails when the funds are a little low. I also like the American Standard toilet I got there. I was looking for a replacement and the sign said will flush two buckets of golf pails. I slid it on the cart and never looked back, best $200.00 I ever spent and its taller than the old one, that helps an old guy.

Like my HD store, there is always some one asking if they can help you, but if I go to Lowes you can't find one employee, they seem to scatter like mice and hide.

I buy the valve that encircles the water tube, not the kind with the lifting arm from HD. Fluidmaster Universal. Its adjustable for desired water depth and a piece of cake to replace.....I have used them on a 40 year old commode and new ones....fits both.

The only Home Depot that I know of that might be left is probable between 80 and a hundred mile away. Closed the one that was close within 3 years of building the building, 10 years ago, think it is torn down now. Other was 70 mile away and closed at same time.

Comments:

I dont go to home depot and expect to talk to a master plumber. But the intelligent workers will do well some of the time.... The Kolher brand seals work better and last longer than the generic brand, as they dont get hard and brittle near as fast. Same for American Standard flush seals.

I take it as the water inlet at the bottom of tank. Get name of the inlet valve/ commode, get the seals. Turn water off, drain tank all the way. Discount the water line, screw the keeper (make sure this keeper is tight to start with) from the bottom (plastic type screw keeper), replace gasket, might be one on inside also, so check for sure, not all have it. The hard part, getting down to reach everything once I got past a certain age.

I agree with most of the others here. I find them to be for the most part very knowledgeable and helpful.
