Howard Land Drain trencher for laying clay land drain pipes. Based on a Fordson Major Diesel with an extra reduction box to make them ultra-slow and equipped with Rotaped tracks. They were a good machine and used by most land drainage contractors in England during the 1940's through to the 1970's.

Can you imagine a cold February day, with a freezing wind blowing, and one of these in the middle of a wet field, with the digging wheel deep in the ground and a blown engine!!!! I do not have to imagine it, I was given the job of getting my van and all the tools, across the field to it, taking the engine out, rebuilding it and refitting it. My apprentice, from that time is now over 70 years old and still talks about it when ever we meet up!!!!

Howard, as in the same company which made the rotavator? Dad bought a new Howard Power Arm three point hitch backhoe about 1970. Wheel trenchers here in NY state were old worn out Cleveland track trenchers brought in from the west.
 
I used to see some of the old Cleveland tile machines around here and once in awhile still run across one setting in a junk row or in a junkyard. Most is plowed in now with Big 4WD's pulling them as deep as 3-6 feet. If it is hard or that deep they usually here run through at half depth on the retrun trip so it is easier to pull through those spots when they come through with the tile in the ground. Some are even on tracks which I think would be better and more accurate for level in the ground. Especially if it was wet when plowing them in.
 
We used the Howard gear reduction boxes in the Majors, and the 5000s for pulling green pea combines. With everything in low, you almost needed to drive a stick in the ground to see if they were moving. (Well maybe just a little stretch) :)
