I have a 80 Dodge pickup with a slant 6. The transmission is bad. I have a 78 Dodge pickup with a 318 v8 engine and a good transmission. Will the v8
transmission bolt up to the slant 6 motor? Thanks Stan

Its been a long time since I worked on them I think it will work you may have to change the mount. I can't say 100% it will work but if my memory says it will work. I suggest to measure the spacing on the transmission before you start. Wish I could tell you for sure.

Does it have an automatic tranny? If it does I think it will .To be sure check with Your salvage yard nearby. Roy

Are both the same model of auto trans?

Could be 727 or 904

Yes they should interchange.

Early 60s had some different crankshaft lengths.

But a 78 to an 80

And both small block, should be just fine

Long live the leaning tower of power

I am certain that a slant 6 auto trans and a 318, or small block auto trans are not interchangeable. The mounting patterns are different where they bolt to thier respective engines. This I know from many years of wrenching on the older mopars of the 60s-70s-80s vintage. If you lived close to me I would rebuild it for you, providing it is isn't too burnt up to put a kit in it. You'll have to get it to a reputable trany shop or get a used one from a salvage yard. Or just swap the 318 and trany into the good truck. As long as you have all the pieces in a donor truck it wouldn't be a terribly hard job. Just my 3 cents worth..

So the 318 truck probably has a 727 Torqueflite, the Truck with the slantie probably does not, but they make relatively inexpensive mounting kits for that purpose.

No V8 box will bolt to a slant. All slant engines have the same exclusive pattern. Mopar V8 patterns are split between small blocks and big blocks, or A/LA's & B/RB's )

Starter location will prevent the transmission from bolting up. The block casting is where the problem will be. they made a hollowed out spot in the cast block and the v8is down lower like along the oilpan if you try to put the v8 trans to the 6 look at that first. And to put the v8 in the 6 frame takes some doing also. I put a 273new style engine in a Valiant once where a slant 6 had been. needed to raise the mounts to clear the frame with the oilpan and then had to make the mounts as regular mounts were to short. I used angle iron welded into a box then drilled the holes for the mounts to bolt up to the steel plate on the engine the mount would have bolted to. I put a piece of old tire tread between them for the vibration and cushion. Also had to make a new exhaust on it since it needed either dual exhaust or a cross over for it. I made the dual exhaust from straight pipe by cutting it then welded after the pipe was turned to fit the angle needed. This was on a 3spd stick. Seems to me I had to make a change to the clutch linkage too. This was all back 40 plus years ago now so might have forgot some of the details too.

It's the way the crankshafts are balanced. One is internally balanced, and the other is externally balanced making the parts different.

You can have a machine shop build you an adapter if they have a blueprint of the mating surfaces. When I was a teen I had a friend's dad who owned a MS and that was his forte!

A friend had a maybe 65 van with a slant 6 and a heavy duty auto, think it was the 727. As I remember there was a factory adapter between the engine and the trans.

I live near Louisville 37 Chief , so unless You got someone this way I cant help much ,,. Not You will want to kik my tail All the Same ,,. I have run over with a bush hog accidently a 3 speed overdrive that was bolted to a slant 6 in a 85 D-100 pikup .ctacked the aluminum case and knocked a hole thru the side ,,. Perhaps the inner workings were good until that happened ,,..Surely A transmission Shop has a replacement ,,.. Try JASPER ENGINES , they have transmissions too
