self driving tractors

Do we need self driving tractors, or other self driving vehicles? Seams like a lot of extra expense needed to operate a self driving vehicle. Just my opinion. I am sure back when cars started to appear, there were people who would say: do we need these things on the road scaring horses. Stan

One of the self driving cruise cars in California ran over a woman crossing the street recently. I don't want to be in a car that I can't control

Many of these cars are considered driver assist rather than full blown auto drivers. I heard of one of these going under the side of a trailer truck pulling across traffic. No brake marks. A fatal mistake trusting the car. They aren't there yet.

Yes. Automation will ultimately end pretty much all jobs at which point some sort of socialist type system might work since there would not be a working class at all.

They are not meant for you. They are not meant for me. They are meant for BTO/corporate farming operations that run 10,000 acre operations.

So unless we get up to that level we will have a hard time understanding why the market may want that.

If there wasn't a need for self-driving semis, tractors and cars, they would have invented them.

No self-driving semi will go on strike.
No pensions, no health insurance, no limit to how many hours it can work, no overtime, No 4 day work week, no distracted drivers, no drunk drivers. Should I continue?
If it is in a wreck, bet your life there will be 360 cameras to find out why and whose fault it is.
I'll take my chances getting run over by AI. It will be safer that things are now.

Out here on the northern prairies, farm help is some of the best paying jobs around. Farmers still cant find enough help.

That said, self driving tractors that are reliable enough to be totally autonomous are not ready yet. The tech is getting close, but just isnt reliable enough today. And this is a tractor in a field, with no one else around.

Might be best paying... but SEASONAL. A guy's gotta feed his family the rest of the year too, and you can't afford to keep them on the payroll at that "best paying" rate when the tractors aren't running and the trucks aren't rolling.

So a guy's gotta go out and get a job in town that pays equally well. Unfortunately there are very few town jobs that will let a guy just disappear at the drop of a hat to drive tractors or trucks for the local farmer for days/weeks at a time. Sure a guy can take vacation time but you need to schedule big vacations weeks in advance. Can you predict what the weather is going to be in a month? Sure a fella can quit and find another job after planting/harvest, but after you do that a few times NOBODY is going to want to hire you because you're "unreliable."

Moresmoke .... not sure where you reside but I'm wondering, what sort of money (wage, salary, etc) makes your local farm help getting paid more than many others in your area?

With AI why would the machines need us? Ever watch the movie "The Terminator"?

Then you never want to be in a car driven by anyone else. The self driving vehicles will have a much better safety record than human drivers but it will take several iterations to work all the bugs out, like with virtually every other major advancement.

I'm 100% in favor! Just look at the auto steer in combines of today! Works pretty darned well.

I don't have an opinion about self-driving tractors, but I do have an opinion about self-driving cars. I live 2.5 miles from I-95, about halfway between Baltimore and Philadelphia and it never ceases to amaze me just how stupid these drivers actually are. With all the other activities going on in their car, they absolutely do not have time to be watching the road. A computer driving the car for them gives me a better chance at survival. I agree the technology isn't there yet, but have high hopes for the future.

Two evenings ago there was a small press conference in a soybean field in Iowa. A past Boss Hog was the center of attention at that conference. This was all farmers gathered except for ag press people and security people. They were all standing in front of a rather new looking 780 green combine with the engine off making conversation. The farmer said he had operated the grain cart tractor from inside the cab of this green combine all afternoon. The grain cart tractor had no driver. He had the computer software in the combine that allowed him to drive the grain cart tractor where he needed it . The Boss Hog asked him how long do you think it will be before every farmer will have this technology. The farmer said 10 years. It likely won't take that long for the B T O's to adopt this tech since it is on the market by some company's.

I have driven all over the country. Drivers in Maryland are some of the nastiest I ever encountered. The way they
drive on the beltways makes me wonder why there aren't more wrecks.

So, you say that self driving vehicles won't make as many mistakes as those driven by people. However when they DO make a mistake, it will be a BIG one!
