At least he made it acoss before it fell in. They just did that down rated a bridge right in the middle of harvest a couple years ago and I have to go around it now makes a few extra corners and a 3 mile detour to get to the house for bin unloading when I don't need the extra work.

In the past I had to cross a 5 ton bridge to get to my house.

I called the parish (county to you guys) and asked about the
concrete trucks and tractor trailer loads of dirt crossing the
bridge. Was told we down rated the bridge several years ago
in a hope some would reduce load size but we also realize it
is the only road access to my area.

Luckily they finally rebuilt the bridge before we had a major
catastrophe like in the picture.

As I recall, some years ago a dump truck driver near Valparaiso, Nebraska forgot to lower the box after he'd dumped his load of whatever. When he started across
an older truss type bridge, the raised box caught the superstructure of the bridge and the whole works came down with the truck winding up in a creek.

The sad part is, a lot of older bridges have been bypassed by new roads and once the bridge is destroyed there is no justification for replacing it.

I used to live in a neighborhood where the only way out was a blind turn with a railroad crossing about 10 feet up and 50 feet away. There was a bridge that needed replacement on the main road, and the plan was to divert all that the traffic down the side road past our neighborhood. There was a pubic meeting about the plan. I told them that the turn was too dangerous for the amount of traffic they were talking about, which didn't impress them at all. Then I said that wasn't important because they couldn't run truck traffic over the bridge on that side street anyway. They were a bit condescending when they asked why not? The looks on their faces were priceless when I said that I had been under the bridge over Gilson Brook in a canoe and it was supported by a long granite slab about 18" thick, and granite isn't much good under a bending load. I guess they were convinced because they replaced that bridge about three days after the meeting.

Three ton load limit? Either he ignored the sign or maybe he just forgot that he was driving a semi and not the wife's minivan that day?

I wonder what the fines were for that mistake, probably not enough to pay for a new bridge ($1 million plus?).
