871 PTO output seal replacement

I posted this question a couple of days ago and it looks like someone stepped on it with a different topic. So I am posting it
again in hopes of a response. I have a 1959 SOS with a single speed PTO (871) that was in a fire about 2008, and has been
sitting since then. I have just completed getting it back to running condition. Is it possible to replace the PTO output seal
without removing the PTO shaft? I have reviewed the PTO overhaul section of the Ford manual. I have also just drained and
refilled the hydraulic section. After draining the differential and upon filling it, I discovered why it had less than two
quarts of fluid in it; the fluid flows out of the PTO seal. I am not looking forward to draining and refilling the hydraulic
section if I don't have to, so I am asking the people who know. Thanks.

You may try posting this question in the Ford tractor section, there are some very knowledgeable Ford people there and they may not see your question here, as some don't browse through all other forums here.

I have changed pto seal by drilling a small hole in the seal screwing in a metal screw and using a nail bar to pry it out ( had to try several times

You have to pull the pto shaft to replace the seal.
The pto shaft seal is holding back about 5 gallons of oil which is gonna rush out when you remove the rear bearing retainer to replace the seal.

Some people have had good luck nosing the tractor down in a steep ditch and doing it that way. I have never done it that way.
I just drain and refill.
We have a very good Ford board here at YT.
Best to ask your Ford questions there.

I just looked up your previous post on this subject. It wasn't "stepped on" at all. It just received no responses, which means nobody that read it knew the answer or even had enough information to postulate.

Only advice I have is to ask, what does it LOOK like? Does it look like a lip seal installed from the outside? If so you should be able to drill a hole into the seal, pull it with a slide hammer, and drive a new seal in.

Barnyard,
Just an fyi - for you and others here.
The pto output is nearly identical on all the
small Fords from the 1939 9Ns till well into
the 1980s.
You must remove the pto shaft to replace the
seal.
It's just 4 bolts and the whole pto shaft
slides out. Then you can remove the circlip
and rear bearing to replace the seal.
It is childs play to do but you do have to
plan for the 5 gallons of oil that wants to
gush out when you pull the pto shaft.
Not a big hardship IMO.
Photo shows my 3000. His 871 is nearly
identical.
