Hi I am kinda new here I bought a Ford CL340 skid steer with a wisconsin engine I know they made them between 71 - 73 but not sure what year is mine it has 2 serial numbers 340 is one and the other one is 2050 Help!!!!! Thank you

Hello ckid welcome to YT! I am going to give you what
might be considered an inappropriate answer.. who
cares? Many tractors and other equipment are UNLIKE
vehicles where changes between the years can make a
difference for acquiring parts. On these machines the
changes are tracked more by serial number than by
year. Attached is the manufacturers online parts
catalog covering (1/71 - 12/73). According to the
subsection descriptions 19ER6783 must be a heavy
duty option. Not sure what 19ER3401 or other numbers
mean or how to find out which one you have.

Take your engine s/n over to Smoke Stak and go under
the gasoline engines category and see if there is anyone
there who can break down a Wisconsin serial number or
maybe direct you to someone who can. If original engine,
this should get you within a month or two. Remember that
the pumps and motors are stamped with numbers too,
and the manufacturers ( Cessna, Vickers, ) can be
contacted for information on date codes also. Erickson,
who built the loader, is long gone they became orphans
when Fiat acquired Ford New Holland. A dealer called
Kromminga in Monticello Iowa bought up the remains of
Erickson and was selling parts until they ran out. They
dont handle the Ford skid steers anymore, but they may
still have paperwork regarding the company. Give them a
call.

Herman Machine in Wells Mn does or did make axles for some Erickson built loader models.
Axles used to be listed on website but I did not see them now.

FYI: I have a 72 CL 40 and agree with used red. Mine is a v4 104 ci. Ford. The weak point on the
machined is definitely the axles. Treat them with kit gloves. I've had 1 break twice (1st time had
it repaired) and felt very lucky to find a replacement. Do not spin like a top and avoid turning on
hard surfaces when ever possible. I'had mine for 20+ years and it will do a fair amount of work.

Probably just as well anyway. The reproduced axles were not any better than the originals. The only way to end axle problems with those things is to make or have made an axle with the same diameter spline as the rest of the axle, and weld a larger mating spline socket into the sprocket. The original axle was reduced in diameter at the spline by like 50% , and right at this step is where they twist off. It seems like dry conditions is much easier on them; dragging the belly pan back and forth through stiff mud takes much more torque.

I WAS NOT LOOKING FOR PART I JUST WANTED TO KNOW WHAT YEAR WAS MY SKID LOADER

I'm going to assume that you found these two numbers stamped into what is basically an otherwise blank tag. All the silk screening has been rubbed off over the years.

If that is the case, you can safely deduce that the 340 is the model number, because you are dealing with a "CL340" skid steer. The 2050 is going to be the machine serial number.

As they were only made for two or three years, there is probably no technical reason to know what year it was made. For parts changes, its usually a serial number break anyway, and you have that. Your curiosity may have to go unsatisfied on this.
