John Deere 70 Flywheel Removal Help

Hello.
My dad and I have a 1954 John Deere 70 that needs a new oil seal under the flywheel cover.
It's been 20+ years since my dad and mechanic had the flywheel off and put a different one on. He's stumped on how to get it back off.

We currently have the cover off and managed to get the nut off, but the flywheel doesnt seem to want to budge at all. Any advice from the old timers and
modern tractor lovers would be greatly appreciated. There seems to be very little on the internet in terms of advice.

I saw one video where I guy used a metal plate over the nut and smacked it with a large mall. Then he appeared to pull it right off. I dont have a metal
plate. I did try with a 2x4 and managed to break the board in two. The flywheel did not budge at all. And I screwed up the nut with my last swing, so I've
got a new nut coming (didn't damage the splines on the shaft at all thank goodness).

Thank you in advance if anyone can give some advice or maybe has an shop manual for the old 70 with info on proper ways to remove the flywheel.
 
Probably need to put a short shaft piece under a steel plate, that is bolted over the end of the crank and tighten it up then use the bolts to pull the flywheel off.
 
My brother-in-law had a 70 Diesel that had a flywheel that was loose and would knock no matter how tight the 2 bolts were. replaced it with flywheel with a tapered collet that tightened with a square nut. I am assuming that is the flywheel you have. It has been 40 years since I worked on that tractor. I think that I put some wood wedges between flywheel and block and loosened nut and pounded it back to loosen it. Hope that helps. Steve
 
Yep that is what it has the square nut. I'll pass the information along to my dad and we will try that. he for some reason has it in his head that there is a possibility the flywheel is threaded onto that collar? I seriously rather doubt that, but at this point wouldn't be surprised by anything.

Im also hoping the nut I ordered will work in place of the square nut. Do you have any idea if the original nut for the original flywheel and nut like this square one are at all similar? I'm hoping so, otherwise we'll have to find a square nut to replace it. It screws back on, but once it gets to the outside threads on the nut it stops due to being boogered up from the beating. Going to have to be replaced.
 
Is the nut stamped steel, if the flywheel has been converted to ''TaperLock'' that nut would have been replaced with a heavy steel nut.

You didn't mention loosening the two 3/4'' clamping bolts, but surely you've done that?

It sounds like you have a taper lock flywheel. Loosen the big square nut, but leave it on the threads. Bump the flywheel gently with a heavy maul, it should knock the flywheel loose on the taper. When it is loos, remove the nut and carefully lift the flywheel from the crankshaft. Why didn't you take the nut all the way off before bumping the flywheel? Because you didn't want the flywheel to jump off, hit the floor, or hit you.

We will try the above suggestions using wood blocks to wedge up inbetween the flywheel and engine. I'll post later how we got along for anyone else viewing this thread to let them know how it went for us. Thanks guys!
 
we've tried several of these methods and the flywheel is still stuck on there solid. anyone else have any more suggestions?
We have even tried using a come along and chained it to a tree and carefully put pressure on the chain to pull the flywheel towards the tree. nothing....
 
Update! We got it lose this evening! With the help of a come along and a couple of smacks on the flywheel she popped right off! Will be taking a look at the seal tomorrow and getting it replaced. It got dark on us. Thanks everyone!
