This 77 is in remarkable shape yet & still puts out a good bale. Turned over nice & smooth & the Wisconsin was singing away.

Lots of Green tractors on the go in this video & even a Deere thresher is to be found.

Enjoy!

I loaded the wagon behind one these back in the 80's for a neighbor. His baling tractor was a John Deere R with cane tires.

Lovely old baler, not seen one like that from New Holland, my introduction to their balers was with the 68 and 78. Are they the same knotters as on the Massey Harris baler, we had the 701 with knotters that look very similar?

your rockin it. lol. i remember we baled like that from the straw pile with the old ihc 46. thought we were in heaven to have square straw bales.

When I was about 12-14 years old I worked on a crew with an older baler owned by a neighbor. It was hailed as the latest thing, the pickup baler, but it was a manual wire-tie that required 3 men on the baler, one for feeding it and inserting the spacer blocks, and two for tying. What a revolution the automatic tie baler was!

Man I loaded a lot on f bales behind one of those. We started with the manual tie wire bales, I was too small to handle those bales but when we got the 76 I was older and spent ever other load helping load the wagon. The other job was in the mow when the wagon was unloaded. Memories, Thank You!

Do you recall what brand the hand tie baler was? Sounds like a McCormick No. 15 by your description.

yes , as we used a thrashing machine and the straw was one big pile for a quarter section of land. had to go to the pile with a hay rack and load it up for cows bedding.

My neighbors 2 brothers ( they would be about 105 - 110 years old ) had a wire tie baler that thier wives sat on ,one on each side I think, fed the wire, put the blocks in and tied the bales, one brother drove, the other on the rack, they( the wives ) were very dirty at days end. When they bought a 24 T new ( the son still has and uses it) they said the 24 made to light of bales so they used the wire tie on the straw for years. the one brother Sidney made a tool to straighten the wire ends so they could be used several times.

What a contraption by todays standards. But all the basics of a NH baler are there. The knotter looks very close to its modern counterpart.

Nice video.

From the time I was a little kid I've always been fascinated by those old New Holland balers and how the plunger would stop and pause at the top of its stroke while the knotter was tying the knot. They also seemed to bang and clunk a lot more than the newer ones.
But they baled a lot of hay. Before Dad had his own baler, he used to hire a custom operator that had one of those.
