Hydraulic fittings

I was getting my John Deere 1520 ready for winter and my 2 loader disconnect fittings are leaking pretty bad. Since I will have to replace the whole fittings I figure I would ask y all what would be the best style to replace them with? I believe it has the pioneer style on it now but is there a better type to use? Also- when I remove the old fittings just how much fluid should I expect to have gushing out?

I'd go pioneer if you have to replace them, but can you just replace the O-rings inside the female couplers? It's pretty common for them to get flattened out and start leaking over time. If they're Deere quick couplers on there now, I think (but could
be misremembering) that they're a #113 standard O-ring. Any industrial supply/Napa should be able to fix you up. Worth trying - might be an easy fix for less than $2.

If they're Pioneer, TSC and loads of other places sell the O-rings in packs. They'll also be a standard SAE#, but I don't know what number they are.

Tractor off, work all of the hydraulic levers back and forth to relieve any residual pressures. Should not be any gushing, only some dripping.

Hmm, a co-worker just told me he thought the Deere O-ring number was SAE #212, and the Pioneer (1/2) quick coupler O-ring is a #113 or #114, so maybe my memory was wrong. Bring an old one in - any decent Napa/industrial supply should have a kit of SAE o-rings.

I just went out and looked-they both look the same and one says pioneer on it. I did not think I could just change the o-ring, but I like that idea a lot better. Is there only one size of fitting or are there many?

Theoretically there are several, but 99% of the time when farm equipment has 'Pioneer' quick couplings, they're 1/2'' ISO couplings, typically called 'Pioneer' as Pioneer is one of the primary manufacturers of them, and because they're used on oodles of
equipment.

I just dug out a set of hoses that have the same fitting and they say pioneer 1/2". So just fish out the old o-ring and put a new one in and that s it? That way to earn easy!

Be aware that just because the coupler says Pioneer on it does not mean it is an "ISO" style connector. Pioneer is a manufacturer, not a style. They also make the John Deere style connectors, which are similar but not the same.

I will be back at the property with my tractor on it in a couple days and I will get a picture of those "male tips". Although I can think of quite a few jokes to add to this response in regard to male tip pictures! I will leave that alone!

A quick online check and I found this picture and it is definitely the style I have. The female fitting was stamped pioneer 4056-4.

If your tips EXACTLY match the photo you
have John Deere couplers. If you are
using the OEM coupler bodies on the
tractor there will be an O-ring with a
spiral teflon ''backup ring'' on the
outward side of the O-ring. Get the O-
ring and the backup ring at the DEERE
dealer. Also look at the male tips, if
they are ''banged up'' where the o-ring
seals or chipped where the retaining
balls grab they will leak and/or pop out
even with the new seals installed.

If your couplers are the same as the picture you posted they are Deere couplers. You should be able to get o-rings from the dealer for them if your tips are not damaged. Also the pioneer 1/2 is the thread size for the back end where the hose screws in. Now if your find the coupler still leaks after changing the o-rings and you need to change the female side of the coupler which can be done but is pricey to the tune of 300.00 plus the last I knew go to the ISO style they will work with many more couplers on more equipment than the Deere couplers will. It alll changes inside the housing from what I understand. Never had one apart though it may be in the future for me with my brothers tractor and would try to get him to convert it over so they would match up with all the other tractors.
