piston rings for Case VAC

I am installing piston rings on engine of my Case VAC. The service manual says to check ring for either a dot or marked top. I have neither and am not sure which way rings should be installed.???

and i will add, make sure you get them correct or you will be pumping oil out. even posting a pic of the end of ring.

Usually when there are no markings, they have squared edges inner and outer, can install either way. If the inside has a bevel, usually that means, the top ring is bevel up, the middle ring is bevel down. If all the comp rings have an inside bevel then pay attention. Those 2 rings perform different functions and the bevel is what allows the different functions. If there's a groove on the outside face, that's the middle ring only and face the groove down.

Where did you get the rings?

There always used to be instructions packed with a ring set.

If those missing, I would demand a copy from the seller or return them.

There's NO reason to ''guess'' with something like this.

The old standard I was taught, the inside bevel goes up because compression pushes that ring tight to the cylinder wall thus why it is called the compression. If two rings have inside bevel, both go up. Ring with a cut out an "L" that goes down and is the second ring, the scraper ring. Bottom ring is wider and usually grooved along with the ring groove on the piston is grooved so oil is squeezed through those gaps and oil the wrist pin and interior of piston removing heat after lubricating.

I was taught that on unmarked compression rings, if the groove or notch on the inside of a
ring, the indention faced upward, if on the outside, it faced downward, hence: Inside up,
outside down. gm
