diode direction

On a 6v to 12v conversion, when putting a diode in the exciter wire from the switch to the alternator, does the band on the diode go toward the alternator or the switch?? Of course I should remember this but not today. Thanks for your assistance. gobble

rustred, yeah I remember what they do, just did not remember where the roadblock was put up. Thanks, I'll go back to my wiring now. gobble

You can test them with a light bulb. Hook it up & if the bulb glows the current is going through. If not it is blocking. Install it accordingly.

Good afternoon Tom, your question: On a 6v to 12v conversion, when putting a diode in the exciter wire from the switch to the alternator, does the band on the diode go toward the alternator or the switch??

Heres my answer:

The BAND (cathode end) goes to the alternator, that way excitation current can flow INTO the alternator but NOT backfeed the ignition, see picture: ASSUMES NEG GROUND

teddy, I tested it after I soldered the diode in the wire. Sure enough, the test light lit up going in but not coming out. thanks for your help. gobble

Diode is used on the 3-WIRE ALT. The 10SI 1-Wire ALT is less wires, less headaches. Only need to add an external inline 1-OHM resistor to coil circuit if using a 6V Coil. Best to swap out to a verified 12V Coil and eliminate any extra resistor.

NOTE: RS was RADIO SHACK, NLA, out of business. Diode is industry standard, available at any electronics supplier.

1-OHM EXTERNALLY MOUNTED INTO COIL CIRCUIT ONLY IF USING A 6V COIL WITH A 12V SYSTEM:
