IH 966 Popping out of Low Range

Hi folks,
Noobie on the site. Have a newly aquired IH 966 black stripe. I was no-tilling a cover crop and she started to pop out of low range on the range selector handle. I was running about 2K rpm in 4L. It happened a few times, mostly when I would stop to check seed level, then start back up. I went down to 3L and didn't see it happen again. Any ideas? Do I have an issue raising its head?

Thanks in advance,

well more then likely ya have a broke detent spring and maybe a couple missing rollers Under the range cover under your feet . This job is not to hard to do . Remove the center section of the floor plate unhook the shift linkage and block up the park loc by placing a 1/2 nut under it keeping it UP . Now may self i like to remo9ve the side plateto the rear of the left step on the side of the rear housing the one with the clipped corner . Now if the trans fluid is AT the full mark then you will loose one gallon when removed , If it is above that mark depending on how MUCh above it could be two gallon to five or six gallon. The reason i do this is when you lift the range cover Reverse shifter shaft may hang in the reverse shift fork as it comes up and also once it clears the shifter fork it will kick out and give y9ou fits tryen to go back together , This also allow inspection of the shifter fork as every once in a while ya may find it to be broken . Under the cover is where the said spring goes on and arm that has a roller on it that drops into the detents on the shifter cam . I would go buy and I T Manual now since you now have the new Tonka toy as it will be a huge help down the road for other issues that will come up. Oh and while you have he cover off NOW is the time to up date the park lock to the 86 series spring loaded park lock . Every 06 up thru 66 that has come thru my shop does not leave with out the up grade.

TV does that updated park brake work enough better to invest the cost? If it doesn't work a lot better than the original I'd not bother. Most of the time we either just shut the tractor off for a park or have somebody drop or pull the pin to hitch and unhitch. The originals were junk. Little better than a tooth grinder.

I just replaced some transmission detent springs on a couple of Fords. Neither was worn but one was 1/16 shorter than new and another was 3/32 shorter. May as well have been broken.

YEa it does . Over here we have HILLS LOTS of hills and the spring loaded deal holds a whole bunch better . Even when the old over center park lock was new and set proper the 806 of my former boss and my uncle 's skipped thru with a heavy load behind it . That is really hard on that gear . Over time and ware things just don't fit right , the adjusting link bends and can buckle allowing them to take off and run away or whip out rev drive gear and that gear is a real pain in the drain to replace and costly . Yea the kit has gotten costly as when i first started installing them it was like 87 bucks , BUT then bad enough when TENNACO got involved the price jumped to 118 bucks and the last one was like 220 and that was before who ever it is now that has there fingers in the pot got involved and really jacked prices. BUT getting run over by your own tractor is worth how much or the grand kids??

TV.. Thanks! Hoping it isn't anything too major. I went completely through the shift linkage and that made a world of difference from the start. The park lock and a new transmission brake have been on my list. Luckily I have the winter to work on the ol' girl. One item I'm not looking forward to is a leaking seal on the left 3pt hitch. I replaced the o-ring from the outside hoping it was gonna be an easy fix but..to no avail. Looks like she's gonna have to be torn down.

Thanks again for the info.
