Thanks for your reply. Yes spool would be the correct term, makes sense. The spool does not go back down. I got full motion of the spool moving up and as I played with it up and down it stuck in the up position (PTO engaged). Yes I did try light tapping on it but it would not move. The PTO worked without slipping both mowing and rototilling. I don't plan to use the PTO anymore this year. I was just wondering if I can operate the tractor as is.

Putting a guard over the exposed PTO splines is advisable, even a taped on juice can would keep rotating parts from wrapping up clothing. It will hutr nothing to leave it running until fixed. Jim
