Nettles ????

Normally nettles don't bother me at all. But today I was pulling a few weeds at a place that I was helping out at and I saw the nettles but didn't really care as they have never bothered me in the past but WOW these sure did. Are there different kinds of nettles or why did they bother me today and have never bothered me in the past. Thanks
 
I don t know the answer, I can t imagine not feeling nettles. I thought they "stung" everyone. As a kid, I would have paid every cent I made putting up hay to be immune to them dam things.
 
They never used to bother me unless I touched the flower on the top tip. Now if I touch the leaf i feel it later on as it gets numb like and itches.
 
We had 2 different kinds in S. Minnesota. They seemed to be the dry-land nettles you find out behind the barn, and the wet-site nettles along the creeks. The ones out behind the barn seemed to hurt worse than the creek nettles.
 
Sometimes the body can become allergic to things without cause or reason. Might be a change in your metabolism, started taking different medication(s), or maybe no reason at all.

Works both ways, also. I've known people who were allergic to things and later grew out of it. Chocolate was one of those things. Could you imagine being allergic to chocolate? Horrible thought! :lol:
 
I know the feeling, nettles sting, and stay with me for a while. Poison oak has never bothered me, all the times I have been around it. Stan
 
Two types around here, those that sting and those that don't. The ones that don't don't have the hairs on them.
 
This brings to mind my experience with nettles in 1958 at Ft Riley, Kansas. Basic training, night-time training exercise, my squad was abandoned far out in the field to find our own way home. We ran into a large patch of nettles--wow!! was that an education! (Then a strong thunderstorm arose causing a bit of concern with the cadre for our welfare) but we made it back to our home area wet but unharmed!

you all may laugh or snicker, but try rubbing penetrating oil on the welts. PB blaster, WD40, whatever you have. It'll take the sting out.
 
There are at least three varieties. One is quite harmless and one is nasty!(The tall skinny ones) Have heard rubbing juice from a burdock plant will sooth the sting.
