New pigs in the kingdom

Had another batch of pigs show up today. 16 so far, I think that will be all. All alive and doing well. This sow had 17 last time, her first litter, but several where born dead and some others died, so she weaned 10. Hopefully she will wean more this time. Some of the dead were from things I did wrong, so I'm confident these will do better with some changes.

I have heard you should never have a wall a sow can lay next to when she has piglets;
The piglet has no where to go when the sow lays down.

Have you had any problems with the sow killing the piglets because she laid on them???

Dads hog housed had bumpers around the walls for the pigs to hopefully escape being crushed. I suppose it saves some.

WOW, I'd bet she was tired and sore after THAT experience! I'd bet she doesn't have enough spiggots to feed that brood......gotta time share!

We put rails inside the dogs whelping box to give them refuge.

That can be an issue, but I haven't had that problem yet. A bumper would be a pain for cleaning, but otherwise a good idea. I'm going to make a farrowing pen, just haven't had time yet. A bumper around that would be easy.

Pen made of regular corral panels works. Just keep it a foot from the wall.
