Tell me why the top part of the drive belt looks shredded.

The bottom part of the belt doesn't look bad, except in one spot.

The replacement belt will be kevlar.
Not sure if this belt is kevlar.

Why does the top side of the belt look worse for wear?

I'm planning to add a stronger spring on the idler pulley.

The pulleys are not rusty. I keep all my tractors and mowers under a roof. Water causes rust. I never wash my mowers.

That usually occurs with an idler misaligned. Check the idlers to see if they are loose, if the bearings are bad, or if the idler mounting bolt is bent. A Kevlar belt will shred just like any other belt if there is a misalignment of an idler pulley.

Heat can cause rust. I suspect you have an idler pulley not turning freely. That would account for the flat side of the belt being roughed up. It's hard to tell about those pulleys because they can seem to be ok when you spin them but with belt tension on them they can then drag. Try mowing for a while then shut the mower and engine off and carefully feel each pulley to see how hot they are.
Dave.

I replaced the V idler pulley the last time I replaced the belt.

The idler pulley is not on the power side of the belt, it's on the slack side.

That still doesn't explain why just the top side shows wear..

I'm going to measure the distance between the belt and the bottom of the mower frame. For sure, Something is not right.

Are you absolutely sure you routed the belt correctly? Maybe the belt is rubbing on something. Look for shiny spots on the body of the mower. The routing of belts can be tricky. I've found more than 1 put on wrong.

Looks like the entire up side of the drive surface is tore up in some places as well as the upper most corner???

Is this the deck spindles belt or the deck drive belt??

Were you mowing anything other than the lawn??

i.e. maybe a stout stick got up in the deck and was interfering with the belt?

Idler pulley is out of alignment and tilted . The bushing on the arm wears .

(quoted from post at 10:25:40 08/15/23) JD is notorious for using odd sized belts. Found it best to use OEM belts from Deere.
IH Cub Cadet also.
A hardware store belt would not last long enough to mow one acre.
But a genuine CC belt would last ten years.

Case's garden tractors also used odd sizes for deck drive drive. Not just length, the width was odd, I forget the exact measurement but just a little off from 'normal'. And I always use Kevlar on every thing I own. Anything that changes direction or wraps around a small pulley will last much longer that way.

That MAY have been a bad belt, but belt routing is critical. Unless you get it exactly right, part of the belt can rub against a guide pin or a lift link or any of the other couple dozen things under there. Also note that some of the guide pins can be adjusted.

might been bad belt. ive had lots of why it break questions asked in my lifetime. usually installed wrong ,overloaded ,object got in wrong place or just simply broke
