Well, that didn't take long. The auburn road hussy heifer had her calf this evening.

It's a nice half Angus bull calf. That answers some questions, number one is that it wasn't one of mine because I don't have any Angus. Brings up more tho, such as when and where. Lol. The funny thing is I noticed her bagging up a while back, but since I didn't have any bulls I thought it might be some other medical condition causing it. But then when I looked this morning it was pretty obvious what was going on. Going to be fun asking around for the father. Lol

Charlie Pride says, ooh the snakes crawl at night, thats what they say. when the sun goes down, ooh the snakes will play. ooh nice calf to!

Just a few years ago, i had a little 8 month old bull. Had the vet take care of him before he figured things out. I had bred a cow AI and thought she had settled. Surprise - She had a bull calf 3 weeks after her due date, almost 10 months later. The vet said, the urge to reproduce is so strong and they can sire a calf up to a week or maybe more after surgery. Sometimes strange things happen!!

Neighbors 3 miles away from our heifers pasture had Shorthorn beef cattle. And one summer a heifer came home pregnant from the pasture, and later had a Shorthorn heifer calf. We went around the fence and couldnt ever find where the bull came in and went back out through. And the neighbors had never had any cattle ever get out, they said.

questions, so many questions... but now there is only one. are you my daddy? Looks like she is adapting to motherhood quite well.

Reminds of grandpa had Brahma cattle with Brahma bulls and bought a Angus bull to cross up the herd. Everytime he would go to the pasture the black bull would be lying under a shade tree or in the water hole. He had some bad things to say about that bull until calves started hitting the ground.....about 90% were black.

that calf will grow fast with all that milk. Nice surprise to have. I have a few Holstein angusX cows that raise very good calves.

My father-in-law had a bull that disregarded boundary lines. When he sold the bull he told his neighbor who said he would now have to get his own bull. He hadn't missed a calf in five years without owning a bull.

Not really, she is scheduled for April and I don't see that as an issue. Give them a few months together then fatten her some for butcher.

If you willing to feed the calf you can get it off mom in a few weeks.
So you have plenty of time.

When I bottle fed calves we put sweet feed and good hay in front of them 24/7.
My goal was to get it off the bottle in 4 weeks.
But they grow so much better if you can leave them with mom for several months.

Yeah, was thinking about the first of the year to wean the little guy. That will give the heiger 4 months to fatten before the butcher date.

Its worth mentioned that just because the calf is black doesn't mean an angus bull bred her.
