An interesting dilemma for the cattle gurus

I have this heifer, she appears to be
pregnant to me. I noticed a month ago or so that she was bagging up some and though that was odd. But when I looked at her today it looks pretty obvious that she is with child.

She has been on the farm for over a year and there are no bulls here. I would hate to think one of my girls would go bad on me, I havent had to use the word harlet and do t want to. To my knowledge no neighborhood bulls have visited. So how did this happen? Will Maury put her on his show and find the father? Lol. If I find the arant trouble maker, can I get child support?

I'm not much of a holstein guy, but if she's 100 percent holstein, I'd say she should be bagged up way more than that if she's closing in on calving. Ussually they have way more milk than a single calf can possibly drink to start out with.

Who knows. If a bull came and went, or she left and came back, you'd of surely known that unless left un-attended for awhile. They ussually gone for atleast 2 or 3 days for that, and ussually don't return to where they came from. Maybe if being fed corn every day, they'd return at feeding time.

A big animal vet would be able to check her for pregnancy. Tell ya if she is bred or not. Not many raise a holstein heifer and not breed her. Seeing an un-bred one this size, is un-common. Most are raised for replacement milk cows.

If you have steers in the herd it possible a nut was missed when it was banded. They dont have to hang down in the bag to be potent.

She is not necessarily bred. I had a heifer that looked just like her. Even that udder looks like hers. Turns out I had a couple of heifers with her that were sucking her but only when nobody was around. Finally saw it from the house with a spotting scope. She had milk in all 4 quarters. Got her bred and 9 months latter when we tried milking her she kicked like a mule. She was the quietest cow you could have just dont squeeze her teats. Turns out there was a blockage that once you got the milk going she was fine, let go of the teat and start again, rodeo began again.

A cow will go through a fence to get out but seldom go through a fence to get back in unless it has a hole. So if you have not seen any down fence I think 4520 has the correct answer.
You got a cow you consider to be a steer that is really a bull.
If that is the case this heifer may not be the only one pregnant.

How old is this heifer???
She looks big enough to have a calf but if she is bred to a full blood holstien you might want to keep a close eye on her.

More than likely a one-nutted steer like 4520 said... especially if you band and don't cut them. She's definitely close I'd say.

A few options here. Get her in so you can try to bump a calf if she has one that lose you should be able to bump a calf by pushing on her lower belly. Then there is a possibility that she has been sucked over time to cause it and the last one you would have to try to get some milk out to know .That would be that in this and that would be in the lying around or the sucking let some bacteria up the teat canal and now she has mastitis. Yes it can happen even though they have not been lactating. IF the last is the case you have a few options sell here after the calf if there is one, sell her now if not one or treat her for the mastitis usually with a syringe of antibiotic up the teat canal. OR as Doc POl would do a large shot of antibiotic in the hip. I think If you don't bump a calf I would get a vet out to look at her. Mastitis can kill a cow or heifer. IF you sell here she will not sell well looking like she does if no calf.
