Neat lookin old baler (Brand?? New Holland ??) When I was a used farm machinery dealer back in the day I saw them but most were much more modern looking. Of course you see plenty pulled balers with a huge Wisconsin gas motor I also liked. Those and similar self propelled swather mowers always appealed to me but I never got the chance to buy and use any.

That is a Jones baler from Wales, They based it on a Massey 726 chassis. They made a range of balers and even a few combine harvesters before they were taken over by Allis-Chalmers who adopted the baler as their own. Tests on the combine showed it was better than the Allis-Gleaner in European conditions but, it got dropped and only a couple of prototypes were built.

Machinery jockey out in western Kansas had three of the selfpropelled New Hollands a while back. Picked them up for next to nothing and advertised them. I believe two went to Ohio and another to Indiana. One was good and possibly working, the other two needed lots of work. He bought them because they were cheap and he was into them for less than scrap price - when he advertised them with no price he was shocked by the offers.

Friend restored a NH model a few years ago and it looked better than new. There was a special trailer made to haul them made by the Donahue trailer company of Durham, Kansas. He found one and restored it also. I should have kept a picture of them.

The sign on the baler says it is a model SP 166 N H. 305 units produced in 1957. 29 are known to be in running order. Pretty rare piece of equipment and probably has above average value for a baler.

Our local New Holland dealer had one back in the day. He did a lot of custom work and also bought and sold hay. My dad hired him one time to bale several fields of hay. I think Dad had sold the hay to him standing as I recall a self propelled swather was also used. it was exciting for a little kid to see that equipment in operation.

There is a New Holland in a fence row here ,with some trees shading it. I look for every time I go that way . Cant imagine how dusty it was with you sitting over the ram. Im thinking !
