Just opened a bag of potato chips. It said Product of Canada on the bag. Didnt know 'taters' were grown in Canada. Is it a large industry?,or something in a small local area?

My dad was in the navy in WW2 down east and had a navy friend from PEI .... when asked once by an officer on parade where he was from he replied ... 'Spud Island sir'.

I am sure that you are probably aware of the size of Canada. And have a good idea of the population. Potatoes are a crop grown widely across the country. The tiny Island province of Prince Edward Island is quite famous for its red soil and potatoes, though it has a very small population , roughly 157,000. So naturally the potatoes grown there need to be father processed into frozen French Fries or made into potato chips, if not sold as fresh potatoes. Both Ontario and Quebec are much larger than PEI in both land mass and population, also grow more potatoes. The provinces of Manitoba and British Colombia also grow lots of potatoes. And place that has light sandy land with plenty of water to irrigate can grow potatoes.

you have got to be joking this time! every garden in canada has potatoes! didnt u hear of stompin tom and bud the spud? and another big load of potatoes. i have seen 1/4 sections full of potatoes plus the hutterites grow their own also. all kinds of potatoes here.

Oh man is Phillip D. going to be upset when he reads this ....LOL
Potatoes are everywhere, but i am curious as to the brand of chip is being shipped stateside,
and the cost compared to what we are charged ?

I saw a potato field about an hour from here last week....had to be 600 acres...
I plant over 100 plants every year for our own use, like my dad did 60 years ago.

Well, potatoes are big business there for sure. I believe there is actually a Spud Island somewhere in PEI.

$5.99 for a 113oz bag of plain, just salted Lays brand chips.
Central Florida

As fragile as chips are, I can't imagine they get transported too very far from the chip plant.

Major industry in PEI and NB. McCain Foods got it's start in NB with potatoes.

I was here this year:

Yup, we grow a few spuds up here DR ..... keep a few chickens, a cow or two and maybe a pig. Grow a lot of our own veggies too in addition to potatoes .... LOL !!!

The major potato growing region north of the border is in southern Alberta, centered around the town of Taber. It is home to three large french fry plants and a Lay's potato chip factory.
