How many volts should my meter show going into the coil ?

Points open battery voltage, with true 12 volt coil points open 12 volt ( battery voltage) with coil requiring ballast resistor and points closed probably around 5 to 7
volts. John T where are you for clarification

If the points are open and the key on not running the input terminal should show battery volts around 12.4 to 12.6. If the points are closed, probably around 6 to 7 volts (Same situation, on not running). The resistance in the circuit Ballast resistor or resistor supply wire will pass voltage when not loaded by the points grounding the system. Jim
