Baling Hay In The Mountains

Round baling a small mountain field on our farm with the 1977 MF 1105 and JD round baler.

Note - I did not backup prior to dumping the bales as the shifting linkages on the MF do not lend themselves to shuttle shifting very well. Had a few comments on that, thought I would explain.

Enjoy!

Beautiful scenery ! Your 1105 looks to be in nice shape too ! Not sure what you mean by the tractor not lending itself to shuttle shifting. Farm next to ours has all Massey tractors. 3 1100s, an 1135, and a 3545. From what I remember the shifters were all on the right hand side of the dash except for the 3545. I cant remember how they were set up though. Maybe forward gears on one lever, and park and reverse on the other ? I cant remember !

Masseys of that era had little shift levers on the dash console as I recall. Probably worked okay new, but from the looks of them a little bit of wear would make for a LOT of headaches shifting.

Is that all orchard grass or a combination of orchard with other grasses. That looks suitable for horse hay. Is there a new planting of trees that are brighter green than the rest of the forest in the background of the video. Are you in bear country with those mountains in the background. Looks like a heavy yield per acre.

Beautiful scenery! I never back up either because our fields are so hilly it seldom works out that you can dump a bale where it finishes. I just quickly pull out of the window when it's done, let it tie as I'm driving to a good spot to dump it, dump it, then close the gate an tension the belts as I'm heading back to he windrow. You get good at finding spots and timing it so you're ready to go right when you get back to the windrow. I now do that even on our few flat fields: It takes no more time than it would just sitting there while it ties, and saves you from having to shift. You can also often drop you bales side-by-side so they're clustered together for picking up.

I understand what youre saying about the shifting. I tried out a used MF tractor like yours, and I would have bought it too, but the shifter linkage kept jamming up. I told the dealer that if they fixed the shifting issue I would buy the tractor, but they wouldnt do anything except tell me it was just an occasional thing and that I wasnt shifting it right. So I went next door and bought a CaseIH that did shift.
I like to see your tractor and baler making hay in those hills. Pretty countryside.
