Too Much Rain

Got 11.5 inches of rain with wind gust of 60 mph last night in W. Ky. in Graves Co. Several trees down, no electricity for 14 hours and flattened my granddaughter's sweet corn crop. She had already sold 160 dz (baker's) last week and had more coming in with over 100 dz. orders to fill. Oh well, can't fight mother nature. I use a 1962 861 Ford with a Ford 309 2 row planter. I restored both a few years ago. Both do the job as they should. Likely her last year after 9 years since she starts college this fall.

What does a dozen go for these days? When our sweet corn is done I toss the stalks to the sheep. They eat some leaves but trample the stalks.

We've had 9.2, but it came over three week's time. Only one event where we had any damage, and that one took down more trees than I've ever had come down in one storm. Of course nearly every one of them came down on fences. I worked two full days getting them cut away enough to get the fences back up.

They were almost positive we'd get hit again this morning between 6 and 8, but it fizzled and all there is, is a little thin line north of us that's moving pretty fast.

That's too bad, we have only had 2 total this year. I can't believe the corn ist completely dead yet. My barley is toast, no second crop hay either. If I had half that and out did too we would both be happy.

A friend in central Ky is complaining about all the rain cant make hay for 2 weeks.

South of you a couple 100 miles or so Jon, after the flooding rains in early May I cant believe its gotten this dry. Corn is turning blue-grey, beans arent growing, grass hay looks like a mowed lawn so short and its been a month since first cutting.

Had 3 small rain cells go past last evening, heard thunder for several hours. 1/2 mile south, 2 miles east, and 1 mile north, all passed by without a drop on the farm. None were big rain makers, but a small cell like that with .3 to .75 would keep things alive another week. It was pretty disappointing evening.

Supposed to get hot next week.

Will the flattened corn still going to make anything or is it too far gone?Stalks just bent over or broken off?

I started cutting hay this morning because it looked like it had fizzled and was going north. I got slammed right after dinner and got another 1.1 in about ten minutes. That makes 10.3 since June 25.
