Tell me more about the $30for a bale of hay on Southern California. Who would buy that? Horse people would go broke. I am not doubting you, just curious how you sell a bale for that kind of money. Bill

Check Mayr's Tack and Feed, Del Mar California. For hay prices. Just one feed store in the area. It's hard to believe what people pay. When Dad raised Oat hay, he sold two wire 100 lb bales for $3.00 delivered. That was in the 60's, which was probably a far price. Stan

(quoted from post at 21:43:20 07/13/23) Strange huh, $3 in 1960, adjusted for inflation is a little over $31 today.

Yet, a 100lb small square bale sells for $3 at the farm today, and the person buying it will STILL cry highway robbery and try to shame you into selling it for less.

I always tell people who complain about high prices at the hay auction, apparently you have never been to the New Holland store.

Gotta remember that this is hay in a retail store not out of some old farmer's barn. Can't just be whatever grew this year. Has to be a specific type of "hay," such as alfalfa. Has to be weed free. Bales have to be "pretty" and of consistent weight. That's expensive to achieve. I'll bet the farmer has $10 into a bale of hay just making it.

Feed stores here were selling alfalfa hay for $35 per bale last winter. Now new crop hay is $28.50. This is for 3 string bales that weigh 100 lbs. Pretty tough when cows are eating a bale every day. I am about to order a retriever load which is 80 bales I believe. Will report how that comes out.

(quoted from post at 07:11:30 07/14/23) Sad part is most horse people think they need to feed their riding horses the same way people feed racing or work horses.

They also expect to get it for $3 a bale.

The ones paying $30-up for a bale either have more money than brains, or are desperate.
