Did I make the wrong decision?

A month ago I was a healthy strong 79.5 year old throwing 4-500 bales a day , but my PSA was 37 and climbing. After many tests and probes the Urologists insisted I needed a shot to kill my testoserone and a series of radiation treatments. Now I'm s sickly weakling hardly able to get on a tractor. I'm not at all sure that I made the right decision. I worked nearly 80 years to build up muscle that is leaving fast. My tractors don't even recognize me.

Wolfman i feel about the same way had a light heart attach Feb.12th.taking a handful of pills daily feel like crap.

Hang in there and keep a positive view on things, wish you the best! It hit me hard at first, but that was 22years ago and I would do it again if ai had to. My prostrate cancer had penetrated the wall, surgery, 36 radiation treatment's and now dealing with bladder cancer. I tell my Drs I worked on stuff all of my life and if its broke I want it fixed!
Going for more x-rays tomorrow. Best of luck.

I was diagnosed with advanced metastatic prostate cancer in February of this year. I got the Eligard injection to reduce testerone. I am on Zytiga to shrink the tumors and prednisone steroid to help with adrenal gland output to starve tumors. Mine has already spread to lymph nodes. Lots and lots of info online. Best info is Dr. Mark Scholz at Prostate Cancer Research Institute.

Yes.....muscle loss and extreme fatigue are two things to deal with. I would highly recommend a researched and well thought out plan of attack ......this is not some git er done project like overhauling a tractor. Your life and quality of life are at stake. Best of luck

Most 79.5 year olds can only dream about tossing 4-500 bales per day. You did excellent to make it that far. I don't wish bad health of course but a slow down might simply have been in the cards regardless. I am going through an adjustment right now where my physical age is catching up to my chronological age and am considerably younger than you.

Almost forgot......I would absolutely demand a PET CT PSMA test before any radiation of the prostate. You may have other areas that the cancer has spread to and it should be verified first.

Second opinions are good for these things as well ans a well thought out plan. I had an uncle that died from prostate cancer and was not a good way to go. He used to be a fairly stout robust guy. When that hit him last time I saw him in the hospital he was a ate up frail person of half his former self. Looked like pictures of concentration camp internees.

Another survivor here. Wolfman if it had already spread into other areas to be frank and blunt your other option was most likely to die earlier than you had anticipated. Its a slow growing cancer but once it spreads things change drastically and go downhill.

That's the trouble with going to a doctor when you get older. They WILL find something wrong whether there actually is or not. You might be OK when you go in, but I guarantee you won't be when you come out.

The whole thing reminds me of a guy who had an IH 46 baler. He did a lot of custom baling with that thing and an M. He had it tuned to where it wouldn't miss more than one bale in five hundred. A younger neighbor just had to have that baler, so he sold it to him. The first thing he did was sit down with the manual and adjust everything by the book. After that, that baler wouldn't bale hay for love nor money. He asked Bill to come over and get it baling right for him again.

The book might have been right about setting everything on it when it was new, but Bill knew his own baler and had compensated for the wear.

I've seen people die from metastatic prostate cancer. If the shots can lengthen the time you are (mostly) symptom free, then I'd take the shots.
I'm already old and weak. I'm not quite 70. You did well to do as good as you were.
None of us are getting out of this life alive.
My Dad made it to 90. I'll be lucky to go another couple years. (4 heart stents, Interstitial Lung Disease, Immune Deficiency, weekly immunoglobulin infusions, etc...)
On the bright side; I'm down to 20 pills a day. Feel pretty good, and haven't been in the hospital or E.R. in over a year.
There are plenty of people who are worse off than me.

I sincerely hope you made the correct decision. Because, I made the same. High PSA for years but no cancer detected until early this year. One of 12 biopsy sample had cancer. Multiple MRIs, CT and bone scans indicate that it is confined to the prostate.
Talked to a surgeon, then a radiation specialist and opted for the shots 91 days apart followed by 6 weeks of 5 per week radiation treatments. Second shot later this month.

So far so good.
Praying for both of us.

I should have said. I had prostate cancer in 2002 and they cured it with proton beam. For 20 years PSA low. Either nnalert or nnalert shots arroused cancer in the lymph nodes. PSMA image had lymph notes light up like a
Christmas Tree. This is cancer in the lymph nodes.

I had high PSA readings too and Doctors found Cancer in my Prostate too. Prostate was removed 2.5 years ago. It has changed my life, but I still have a life. I still get to enjoy my family and Grandkids. Cancer is bad stuff and it has ended life for some people in my circle. Our Time is short.

My first urologist messed around 1-1/2 to 2 years then divided I needed a biopsy got it Sept 11 2002 When I got there, there was a man there madder than a hornet. The Dr had done surgery and the guy was in awful pain. I went on with the biopsy any way, all 13 samples positive. It didn't take me long to find another opinion on treatment!

50 years ago I knew a man who wintered in Rockport,Tx.

His advice was you find the best Drs where snowbirds winter, because they see a concentration of old people's problems.

Drs gave him estrogen shots for his prostate cancer. He said one side effect was he started growing breasts.

He didn't die from cancer.
