Cutting Hay

Beautiful! No telling how many thousands of acres I dropped growing up with a 135 and a NH 451, best times of my life! Thanks for the video!

I've spent more days than I care to remember mowing hay with an MF 41. There is no better sound than a finely tuned sickle mower cutting hay like a knife through butter. I like the shield hanging down off of the lift bars, probably prevents a lot of plug-ups. Thanks for posting!

I, too, spent more time than I care to remember cutting prairie hay with an IHC MD
with a 7 ft. Deere #5 mower and a dump rake.. Dad put up a LOT of hay, never ran short.
Always had some hay left over from year to year. And at that time, we didn't bale.
All put up loose with a Deere G with a Farmhand F-11. Dad wouldn't let me work on the haystacks.
I couldn't make the stacks right. Dad could make the most beautiful square sided stacks
in the neighborhood. Then in the fall, we'd haul the stacks home, one truckload at a time.
Finally, he started renting a neighbors Farmhand Stackmover. I thought we'd died and
gone to heaven!!!

The sickle mower is handy in small tight areas. Most would just bush hog, but I cut for hay.

Thanks for the replies and comments. I especially enjoyed reading the ones regarding using a sickle mower back in the day.

Oddly enough, as much as many hate the sickle mower, it was a great advancement on the farm - displacing a mowing scythe.

When the sickle mower is clicking, it is a pleasure to run and music to the ears and no 10,000 dollar repairs to a 300 dollar sickle mower either, even if you hit a tree with it!

Probably the only new piece of exempt dad ever bought was a Case pull type sickle mower. The government set a side had to be cut every year.(CRP now a days) JD70. THen during hay season I went to the neighbors and cut hay with his 165D Massey and the Dyna Balance mower. I liked using the JD beacuse you sat up high above the hay.
