John Deere Styled A cut hood

Currently restoring a Late styled John Deere A. The hood has a square cut around the muffler as many of these A tractors do.

What is a good way to repair this? I know they make patch panels but I've never seen one installed.

Or do I just clean up the cut edges and make it look descent.

Before you take hood and muffler off take the patch and fit it in place Put 2 screws in to hold it in corect place as when you get hood off you will not get it to fit without fasten

If you are really good, you can use a mig welder.
Weld in the patch then grind the weld. No filler.

So this goes on the top side? Reason for asking is looking at a picture of one from Worthington Ag Parts it looked like thires went up underneath the hood. IF so I would put it over the muffler then put hood on with part of the screws so it would set like it should. Then push the piece up to the hood and with it in place Mark the edges on all four sides then it could be tacked in place with a wire welder for position no hole drilling for screws. The panel from Worthington also looked like it had creases to make it set up level with the hood from the bottom so no filler would be needed unless it just has to not have the lines from the panel in the hood.

I'm looking at the same patch panel and this might be the way to go. Looks like it welds in from the bottom of the hood. I'm just curi ious of what these look like when complete.

My Dad made a piece of heavy tin with a hole for the muffler to slide down the muffler with 90 degree rounded edges on each side to fit the contour of the hood. Easily removable and looks nice to when painted.

Here's mine. Could have been a quarter of an inch farther forward, but that's my fault, not the guy who installed it. I'm very happy with it.
