Upgraded my baler s kicker

I just got in from changing out my 30 kicker to A 40 kicker. Not much second crop to bale, so I may just fill the wagons instead of hiring in a big square baler. That 30 and I had a very bad relationship. It probably would work great for someone smarter than me. I had several people tell me to just change out to a 40, and this one came up cheap on an auction last week, so we will give it a go.

I don't know anything about your numbers, but I ran my fathers JD baler with a kicker in 67-68, it was a great machine! I would
kick about 90 into the wagon, climb up and stand some up round the outside, then kick in another 15-20. Sometimes I would miss
one, and jump off and put it on top of the next bale, and kick 2 at a time. I don't remember any problems with that baler, but when
I left the farm in 69 dad switched to big round bales, and retired in 76.

Now that your baler is fixed do you want to bale my straw? I can pay the same as you offered me a few weeks
ago. At that price I might even supply the twine. Tom

There is very little difference between them.
Most of the moving parts are
interchangeable between the two. Filter
and and the ability to have a better
electric control on the distance valve is
about it. Both are a love or hate
situation. Adjusting the kicker is a son
of a gun. Once you do get it set, if you
feed the baler at a faster rate the pan
won't return fast enough and then the bale
coming out of the chamber shoves the pan
up as the bale tries to go under, then
it's a mess. All of the pins attaching the
pan need to be a good fit or the pan won't
lay right. I actually did exactly what
your doing on a 336, and gained nothing. I
had someone operate the darn thing and
watched it for a half day and realized
what was going on. If the feed rate stayed
the same, it would work perfect. Sold it
to friend who didn't listen very well and
was very t'd off until I went over and
showed him exactly how to use it. Uniform windrows and uniform feed is the key to them.

i had a 30 on a1970's 346 baler for many years.Worked pretty good. had to replace drive pump once and thrower spring and pan bushings a few times.Still have a scar where pan hit me in face. We used to pull throw wagons to field in pairs and once i found baler operator pulling the pair behind baler and loading the rear wagon first .

If you are having problems with any of the hydraulic kickers then a part is broken or out of adjustment.
They are simple to operate but like anything, read the manual, and grease the thing. Sometimes the
main spring breaks. Sometimes the small reset springs break. Ive had the throwing cylinder seal blow
out. But they are over 40 years old and tossed thousands of bales a year, very good record. I shorten up
the bale length on 2nd cut alfalfa and go about 8 inches longer for straw and dont change the trip
setting. Works perfect.

Im 40 plus years of running a 336 with a 30 thrower, never had to adjust thrower for feed rate. Distance adjustment on ours was very precise. Never had problems with it didnt matter if it was 30 ft of hay raked together or 9 ft. Worked perfectly

There was definitely something wrong with mine. The 40 never missed a beat. Most second crop was made into big squares, I only did two racks to test it out. Neighbor wants to borrow it for 9 racks of straw when wheat is off. It cost less than a service call. There are always kickers on the ground at consignment sales here in SW WI. Lotsa balers had them and when Mexicans buy them to ship back home, they drop the throwers to save space on the truck.
