John Deere planter seed plate selecter

Picked this little gem up this week. Came from a dealership in eastern Iowa. This was used to help farmers decide which seed plate to use in the days before hybrid corn. Everything turns over. The seller says he has an operators manual for it. I saw one at a show many years ago. Tom

Cool Find!! Looks like it drops the seeds on the belt, should there be something to catch the seeds coming off of the belt??

I have the one from our dealership and remember it in the old building in the 70's but do not remember seeing it used but i was only 12 at the time

Interesting piece. Didnt know such existed. I recognize the gearbox . Same one is on my 1948 JD 290 planter. Neat indeed.
Thanks for sharing. Adds to our vintage knowledge.

Anybody that wanted one could make one. Just get an old 290-490 planter seed box and drive thru gear box from ground wheel. Just figure out the speed to drive the planter axle and use a small electric motor to drive the unit at planting speeds. Think they probably used a 1/6 horse electric motor. Local seed house had one but never saw it run. Just take any plate you had and put it in and it would tell you plant population. Probably over 40 years since I saw it and am now 79.

where was that when i was a kid? dad would mark the drive wheel put in a plate and tell me how many turns to turn the wheel.. you better stop exactly where he told you.. then start counting seeds. dad would do the math and ya of nay the plate selection..
