Ohms of field coils in generator

cvphoto156001.jpg

Working on a non functional generator. What is the typical ohm reading for the field coils, this is 6 volt.

I'm using a multimeter from the Field stud to the brush....Unless there's a better way to test? They are isolated from ground, I'm seeing 2.0 ohms.

Pic is just me testing stuff

Thanks,
Brandon

Two Ohms sounds reasonable to me.

Another test you could do is to probe the connection between the two field coils and Ohm each one individually.

Obviously, they should read the same.

Another way to approximate the resistance of field coils is for example the field current for a 12 volt generator were say lets use 3 amps,,,,,,,,,12 Volts/4 Ohms = 3 Amps so that would mean each of the series coils was 2 ohms each.

Some problems Ive seen regarding bad fields is they 1) Have a short to case/frame 2) They are open 3) The splice where they connect in the middle is open or shorted.

Some problems in armatures is they have a short or bad/burned/melted connection to the commutator segments or the bushings are bad and the armature is dragging. Or the commutator is all dirty oiled or carboned up or the insulation needs undercut

Some brush problems are they are worn down too short or the hold down springys arent keeping them pushed down tight against the commutator

My Troubleshooting Procedure linked below can help find the cause of non charging. Try the Motor Test

It failed the motor test. The commutator was really dirty and the insulation was flush, and the bearing wouldn't spin. Otherwise I haven't found anything.

I'm hoping it will work after repairing what I found. The brushes don't seem worn much, and the springs are strong

Thanks, I'm glad it seems right. I'm going
to get it back together, this week I hope,
and see if it gens again

Aren't you the gentleman I met years ago at a New York State Two Cylinder Expo where I was giving ignition and charging system workshop seminars????

I don't know about gentleman, but yes, we met, swapped lies along with a group of other internet weirdos
