How much play should the axle shaft have pushing in and out. I have a knocking in the left wheel and when I took the final drive out the bearing will go on and off with no problem and I had at least a quarter inch play in and out. I was going to press the bearing back on but I am not sure if that play would have been my problem. I do not see anything missing or hurt in the final drive. Thanks in advance for any assistance

Take the bearing in your hands and try to push and pull the inner race sideways against the outer. That will be your bearings looseness. Then stack all the pieces and measure them then measure the length of the shaft with the journals locating the distances this should give you a pretty close idea of how tight things are sideways or the end play. I would expect enplay to be in the thousands new or slightly more certainly not a 1/4 inch though. I would also believe there must be some shims in there to adjust the clearance on it.

Might be lighting but highlights in red a blue need to be looked ,over ,appears the axle is driving from bull gear,s being driven out , bore in axle hub should confirm ,if larger than bearing outside diameter with bull gear is loose .
1/4 is excessive must be correctly repaired .
Whatevers holding the axle in diagrams not doing it job .
Cant see diagrams that well , you all find it .

It's hard for me to determine what part number is what in your picture but, these are from my SA and 140 books. On the end of the axle there is a retaining bolt to hold it all together. Next is a thick dome shaped washer, part #43240 D, then there is either a spacer, part # 47905 D which is used in the instances where there is NOT a sprocket hub installed on that wheel. When a sprocket hub is installed on that wheel, part number 47906 DX, is used as the spacer to gap out the remaining space to install the sprocket hub. It'll have the double d shaped pattern internally to fit tight onto the axle. Are either one of these in place to fit your needs according to if you need the sprocket hub installed or not ? Both are a good quarter inch thick. There is also a large machine washer that fits in behind this. A very small amount of play in an out is ok, but not a quarter inch plus. Hope this helps.

Thanks mine does have the sprocket hub and I pressed that bearing on the axle and put it all back together and it took the play out. Hope to put it back on the tractor this week and see if the noise is gone. The guy I bought it from said his foot slipped off the clutch and after that the knocking started. I wonder if it is possible that bearing came loose from that. Thanks for the help I am learning as I go on tractor restoration

I guess anything is possible. I recently helped my son do this same job on his SA and his 140. I didn't know this till we tore into the SA, but the bearings are essentially the same except..the correct SA bearings have less roller balls in them than the correct 140 bearings do. It looked possible to mix and match what is the ''wrong '' bearings into one and it have a slight bit more shaft play than desired.
