CaseIH shifting pattern

Trying to buy a '91 time-line 395 that comes with an 8 speed and 16 speed per Tractor Data info. I am assuming this particular tractor has the 8 speed synchronized geared tranny. There are 2 shifting levers: Near the fender is a F-N-R and between it and the seat is another lever with an ingraved rubber cap on the shift lever showing 1 thru 4 + N. The tractor is currently in the low range, like the Fords (I'm pretty much a Ford guy) with the HI-Lo 8 speed setup.

The question is, where is the lever that changes the range from Lo to Hi on such equipped CaseIH tractors? Gotta get this answered if I am to buy the tractor.

Many thanks for any inputs,
Mark

There is a plastic toggle (left or right) switch, lever action half an inch wide and 1 1/2 long just to the right of the instrument panel. PO put a green tape on the right side of the lever. This may be the thing of which you speak and the green tape reminds him that it's high range. I'll check it out and thank you so much sir.

There is also a lever action toggle (after market addition) just above the pump fuel cut off lever to the left of the instrument panel. This might be the aforementioned switch.

So I assuming that the selection from Lo to Hi is via an electric solenoid.....yes-no?

Those would be light switches. I am going off my 895. My switch has a gear beside it with a bunny running above the gear and a turtle below the gear with an arrow pointing down. The arrow for the bunny is missing.

Not 100% sure on the 395 but if the lever nearest the fender does forward and reverse it should also do the high/low. If I remember correctly low forward should be straight ahead from reverse, high range should be closer to the seat and ahead. You should be able to get 8 forwards gears without an electric switch. The exception would be if theres a lever like the throttle lever to the left of the steering wheel - there was an optional shuttle transmission that used that lever for forward/reverse and then the lever next to the fender just goes forwards for high and back for low.

That makes more sense as IH providing a separate control just to shift between F and R is a lot of parts to do something that is usually incorporated in another functioning control.

I appreciate your time, will try out today and get back.
Thanks,
Mark

After I sent your comments to the owner, he found that yes they were for lights. I will find out this morning. I think I got positive information from here that the lever closest to the fender has low range and reverse pushed in that direction and hi range if in neutral, pushed toward the seat then forward. This one makes sense as to me its stupid to dedicate one lever just for F-R determination.

People are telling you where the TA is. That's not the "Hi-Lo" range.

The "F-N-R" lever should be the "H-L-N-R." in an h-pattern.

These are what the knobs should look like:

To Sam and Barnyard: The range lever on the 395 is a 90* lever, vertical and then horizontal. No rubber patterned button. The 1234N had the pattern as shown. Sam your rememberance was right on. As shown in the diagram Barnyard displayed, which I just saw when I cam to thank you, put it in N and push toward the seat and forward for high range.

Everything worked fine. Bought the tractor for a fair price, new 750-16 six ply fronts, 13.6 x 28 six ply rears 80%, new urethane paint, looks great, and the seller hauled it home for me with his goosneck...too heavy for my 16' tandem. The tractor starts instantly, no smoke, no issues with the power train, cooling, engine, PTO, or Cat II lift which I prefer. PS is very responsive and I like the IND PTO. Wet discs are very responsive and quiet, clutch is stout.

I was able to locate the Owner's, Parts, and Service Manuals on ebay and they are on their way. As is usually the case the instrument panel was a basket case and have yet to find one. That's one thing about Fords, ebay has them for a song and I outfitted my Fords with them. Since I only need PTO, RPM, temp, oil pressure and fuel, I may make a manifold with cutout for individual instruments...would be like 10% of what I heard about the cost of the new one....if you could find one.

Thanks for your time and thoughts. I really appreciate it.

Sounds like a nice machine, those dashes did not fare well in the elements. You can probably source the gauges for an older version that would work (the 385, 485, 585, 685, and 885 were one generation older and had individual tach, fuel, coolant temp gauges and idiot lights for the rest).

Today I ordered a Ford dash, new, for $104, free shipping. I have ordered the Case Service Manual and already have several time line Ford SMs. With that, my Ohmmeter and some playing around I have every confidence I can it working. Installation adapter plate is a no brainer.
