3.152 motor

might anyone know if all 3.152 motors are interchangeable?

specifically if the 3.152 motors for the Massey Fergason are the same and could be used in a JD 300 Backhoe that says it uses a 3.152 perkins diesel also?

trying to rebuild a JD 300 ... finding lots of stuff for MF but seems much less for the JD

thanks in advance,
bobstahl

Perkins made the A3.152 which is the indirect injected engine, and the later AD3.152 which is the direct injected engine. I've never seen either one used by John Deere in
US equipment. JD DOES have their own 3-152 engine though.

As Dieseltech posted. John Deere made their own 3-152 engines which were used in the 300 industrial tractors among other models. They are not the same engine as the Perkins engines.

You need to do a little more research. The Perkins is a dry sleeve engine and the JD a wet sleeve. Totally different animals. Parts
are readily available for both. I have rebuilt both of them in the last year. This site sells kits for both.

That s kind of disappointing, but explained a few things for me. I thought i read it was a Perkins, but i looked back at my documentation and couldn t find where i read it, so i must have presumed. I have the head off and at the machine shop, it looked okay but wanted it gone through anyway. The machinist said the center piston is touching the head each time it comes around. Not bad enough to dent or damage anything yet, but he says the block will need going through. So i was looking around to see if i could fine a short block to buy. Parts seem difficult to find and always seem to cost quite a bit more than parts listed as Perkins parts. Quite a few rebuild kits show up when i search but i haven t actually tried to order a kit to fit the JD so maybe they are for Perkins also? Was thinking i would drop the pan off and remove center piston to have a look at it next before i try and get the block out. Thanks so much for the info.

If you don't have the correct John Deere service manual for your tractor, I suggest you get one before going deeper into it. You may need the serial number to get the right one.

Perkins 3.152 kits are for Perkins engines, John Deere kits 3-152, or 3152, kits are for John Deere 3-152 engines. The kits are not interchangeable. A web search for John Deere 3-152 short block will get you hits for the JD engines. The same for parts for them. Specify John Deere 3-152 engine in your search, (not just 3.152 which is the common way the Perkins engine designation is printed).

Below is a link to the John Deere 300 Industrial loader tractor parts catalog. You can use it to get JD part numbers and use those part numbers in your web searches. (The loaders and backhoes used on the 300 tractors had their own parts catalogs, separate from the tractor parts catalog, those are not in the tractor catalog.)

You guys are great i sure appreciate all the help and info. If i get this rebuilt it will be only the 3ed motor i have ever rebuilt and the 1st diesel, so I m just a diesel newbie.

I currently have the following manuals;
Tractor - JD300 Series PC-972
Technical Manual - 1068
Manual T42365
Catalog 3169

The casting number in the block is ; T26935 or T26S35

The only tag i found so far is ; SNT 4W3D 022051T

i have not been able to find anything on the net using those two for serial numbers. I think there may also be a tag for the loader and one for the hoe but i figure those are for the attachments.

Injectors are directly into the cylinder.

That what i know so far, just started on it a few days ago.

I will check out your resources to see if there are some books i don t have, and once again thank you so much for your help.

Do i have to remove the loader to split the thing to get the block out

Most of the time casting numbers are not part numbers, find the part number in the parts catalog and use that. Sometimes the JD parts catalog will reference a casting number in a description, but not always.

SN = Serial Number
T = Tractor

4 = 300
W = Industrial
3 = Diesel
D = Collar shift transmission with reverser
022015 = this tractor's unit (serial) number
T = built at the Dubuque Tractor Works

I don't have a list of the unit/serial numbers of the 300s but from other industrial equipment I would say your tractor is 1966 vintage.
