Farmal Super c? Sitting for 20 years at least steps to

I have a Farmall super C? I think. It has been sitting in the weather for years. Trying to get it to run. Can anyone help walk me through where I should start. It does nothin when I try to start. Should I first try to convert to 12 volt system? Also the caps are not on for oil filler and exhaust? Should I start with oil change?? I am completely lost!! Thanks for your suggestions!!!
 
U are totally off the track ! if the exhaust pipe was not
covered its scrap iron. 20 years with rain going into the
cylinders, she is done for. I will not even get into what all
you need to do to get it running. Locating a used engines
would bd ur best bet if u must have that tractor running.
Or spend 4 times what the tractor is worth to rebuild that
engine.
 
Hello Sdmillon welcome to YT. I have ..in fun.. told
rustred he should get a leash for that dog that bites
him every morning. I do agree with him but hopefully I
come across with a little less tone. Does the engine
turn at all? If it does it would be right near a miracle. I
would say the only possible way it may be loose and
able to turn is if it was not out in the actual outdoors
for all that time or it was setting in a desert area. If the
engine turns report that back to us. If it is locked and
you need proof of what happens when old tractors set
out unprotected pull the spark plugs out. On some of
them if not all the part that sticks in the cylinder will
likely look like a big rust barnacle. Next get a 5 gallon
bucket and drain the oil. Likely multiple gallons of
water are in the oil pan below the oil. After you get this
done report back. I will go one step more than rustred,
in my opinion looking for another tractor that runs for
$1000 - $2000 would put you way ahead in total
investment to have a running and useable tractor. Now
if there is some emotional attachment to this particular
tractor then you are heading into a heavy investment in
a labor of love.

oil filter off setting out doors humm water in crankcase is bad
news as well as water in exhaust. id vote for replacement engine n
be very sure you get a c or super c block as early a and b blocks
look the same till you go to install hydraulic pump n there is no
place to bolt it on
 
I'd find one running and save this one for parts. Cheaper in the end. not like that is a rare model to find several for sale. Might be different in different areas though. If you are determined to go through with this endeavor then pull the plugs and look in the cylinder with a bore scope ,drain the oil pull pan and look at what you have there. When putting pan back on don't worry about a gasket yet at this point. Don't worry about conversions of any kind yet. You may have a frozen busted head ,block or other detrimental things going on that you decide to change course. With the bottom checked out you can now if things look ok though setting outside that long I doubt. Let set with oil squirted in the cylinder a coupel tablespoons let it set for a week or so. IF the engine turns which I also doubt roll it over by hand slowly till it make a complete revolution then you can start looking at turning it over with the starter. After you put the new or old separated oil back in the oil pan. I do think you have a boat anchor in the engine department though.

Thank you for your answer. I am not sure if it will turn over. I will take a quick look. You had mentioned maybe finding one for cheaper? I am in Mississippi. Any direction you can make on how to find a cheap tractor?? Retired so not much there for me. Thanks

256-4zero4-0123. This motor came loose, no
rebuild, runs great, no smoke, good
compression. Rustred said it never would.

Took about 5 weeks and just a few hundred
$ to put this B back together. Seller had
disassembled it 20 years ago to paint it.
 
Rustred.... This B is alive and well no rebuild, no tear down, good compression, no smoke. Sorry to prove you wrong.

Good project ! Drain oil out fluid the crankcase . Drain radiator close stop cock ,leave the crankcase plug open (fill with water ) and watch
for water ! Note where the whole system is leaking water.
Get back to us. If water come out crankcase you need to tell us. Dont open the motor up till you get an estimate of cost .
The 12 volt conversion are months or never away !

Make an outline of project
Get a diary to track your daily efforts. Youll will need it !
 
I never said it wont come loose! I said u needed sleeves. Mechanics all laughed at u , for using them pitted sleeves. Then u would not show us anything till u had it running.
 
U did not prove me wrong. U need to go to engine classes. The instructor would teach u properly. Old is not a mechanic.
 
Don't need engine class. Not building Indy cars. Just having fun with a hobby. Catch that part .... Having fun.

You say you don't know anything about old tractors. Do you know anything about engines? It all applies. Just because the shape of the package is different, it still has the same parts and functions the same way using the same principles.

Trying to walk you through this step by step in the forum is going to be a long and frustrating process for you and everyone involved. You would do yourself a service, even if you "don't youtube" to figure out youtube and watch as many "will it run?" videos on tractors that you can find. My dad who never touched a computer in his life figured out how to do youtube, and if you found this site you certainly can do youtube.

Here are a couple of good authors of books on how to restore a farm tractor.

As others have commented, vintage tractor values are on a downward slope although the recent surge in farm income has temporarily bumped up prices. Thirty years ago your Farmall C was a great candidate for mowing large lawns, today zero turn mowers are a better choice.

First determine how you will use the tractor when it is completed and what your maximum budget is. then evaluate what this tractor will need. It was parked for a reason, find out what was broken back then and add on what has deteriorated since it was last parked.

You will probably spend many times more to restore the tractor compared to buying one that is already field ready or a completed restoration. Spending $1,200 for tires, $2,500 for an engine overhaul, plus clutch, transmission bearings, paint, radiator, missing parts, etc. adds up fast on a tractor that can be bought in running/restored condition for under $2,000.

If you are looking for a project to burn off some extra time and cash, go for it and have fun.
