More 720 John Deere questions

Having fun working on the 720. More questions. Not sure what the previous owner did with the tractor. What would happen if he had the ground wrong. If i recall correctly the 720 required a six volt battery, and had a positive ground, is that correct? Also if the previous owner happened to hook the battery with a negative ground what would be damaged? A side question what do you guys use to buff out a lot of oxidation? I think there is a pretty good paint under that.
Thanks in advance.

(quoted from post at 18:32:17 04/28/23) Gas or diesel? Yes they are positive ground. If a diesel electric or pony motor start?

It is a diesel, pony start 720. Been setting a couple years

My 720 gas is positive ground.

It uses a 12 volt battery.

The wire to the coil runs through a resistor, so basically the coil sees six volts.

A separate wire feeds 12 volts to the starting motor.

While the starter is engaged, another wire feeds the 12 volts to the coil.

So the starter uses 12 volts.

The engine starts on 12, then runs on 6 volts.

Hope thats clear

(quoted from post at 23:30:46 04/28/23) Yes it is, thanks. Will get a 12 volt and where do I purchase a resistor?

DO NOT PUT A 12V BATTERY IN YOUR 720 DIESEL!!!!!!!!!! Not sure what the other guy is talking about. His gasser and your Diesel are 2 different animals.

Thank you, I appreciate the information. Another question, how do I go about bleeding the fuel line? I think I need to do that prior to trying to start it. Thanks.
