Was coming across mid-Michigan today on a state highway (M-46) and came up behind what looked like a M-DOT truck, orange, festooned with yellow strobes and LED flashers. Had a square tank on the bed and was pulling a small trailer. Sign on the back of truck said water so assume it was water! Anyway, about every quarter of a mile or so, it would squirt a shot of water, probably a quart or two and keep on rolling, running about 45mph. Reminded me of someone squirting a shot with a garden hose. Under or in front of right trailer wheel only. I followed him for probably 25 miles before we parted ways, I was towing a cargo trailer and didn't want to risk passing.

I've no idea what he was up to. Wonder if any of the much wisdomed folks here want to venture an explanation.

well that sounds like a typical government workers, justifying their job. maybe he was trying to wash your windshied.lol.

In NoDak those are usually spraying slimy beet juice on the road so if the wind blows and the snow drifts it sticks to the road. Well, they say it's to keep the road de-iced, but...

Minnesota uses a much more caustic solution, sure wouldnt follow that for 25 miles! Replace brake lines every 10 years here, they rust through.

And as mentioned, it just helps the drifting snow stick to the road surface.really not much help out in the country. Windchill defeats the point of it.

Likely they were testing the highway surface. They hit the road with water and then the trailer tire applies some braking action to gauge how slippery the roadway is when wet. They use this info to assess whether to resurface the road or not.
