John Deere 720 Diesel

Good morning folks.

I just got my 720 diesel back after five years. It has been setting all that time. Looking for suggestions or steps I should take to get it running again. It ran good the last time I saw it. First question, as my doctor would say "at your age" I have a bit of a memory issue. So my first question is basic. Which position must the decompression level be in for the engine to run? Forward or backward? That is the first simple question, sure there will be more.
Thanks.

answer to your question is forward. you will be having more fun getting the pony to run first. so once its running pull the decompression
back and engage the starter and just let the diesel engine roll over till you see oil pressure then let the decompression move forward and it
will start . of course make sure the starter engaging lever is pushed forward also. all should be good if the rack is not stuck, then it will
not start. and of course check all oil and coolant levels. i would not be concerned that the diesel is old if it looks and smells good. good
idea to clean the sediment bowl also.
