Easiest way to remove cone washers

I need to pull the axles on a 72 gmc 6500 what is the easiest way to get the cone washers out.I know they can be a real pita to get out sometimes. TIA

Loosen the nuts but leave them on the studs. Smack
center of axle end with bfh. A railroad sledge works best,
but hard to come by.

The mall on the end of the axle is the
excepted way, but my aim is so poor that
studs suffer. I've found a 2 pound hammer
o. The back side works almost as well.
They are split, so once loose I drive a
screw driver in the split to get them off
the stud easier.

We used to hit the end of the axle with a 8lb hammer, you had to be careful to not hit the studs, We did quite a few, so my aim got pretty good. One day we got a hold of a 12lb hammer, it made the job easier, but with a bigger hammer, its easier to hit the studs. When you hit the studs, the hammer just oozes to a stop, and now you have a mushroom to deal with.

Another thing is, after you get one side out, you can put a long bar in and push the other axle out by hitting the bar like a punch.

Use 2 sledge hammers. Hold one against the axle, then hit it with the other. That way you don't smash the ends of your studs.

This is definitely easier with a helper, but it is doable by yourself.

I use two hammers if I am not removing the wheels first. That spaces me out so I can hit it hard and squarely.I have put pieces of rubber hose over the studs first, that works but if you do hit the rubber hard the hammer will try to spin and rip out of your hands. In the early 80's I was working on trucks and bought a tool made for just that job.I found it to be useless until I had the cones out a little bit,and at that point I only needed pliers, not that expensive tool.

A air hammer does this easily. A few
rapps with the air hammer and they usually
pop right out. We did it many times at
the shop.
