Question on insurance

I was talking to someone the other day and we got to talking about insurance on our tractors. Checked with my car and homeowners insurance and they will not cover me while driving on the road, such as on a tractor ride. What do you who go on these rides do for insurance? I am mostly talkling about liability insurance.

I talked to my agent, and they said there is no way they can cover it. I have an umbrella policy, but only covers above my liability policy, and they cannot cover the tractor with a liability plan,,m being it is not a licensed vehicle.

Since you brought it up, I just checked with my agent. My Auto-Owners policy covers on road travel, parades, and hay rides among other events.

I believe you need a farm policy. My homeowners covers me on my property or on say a neighbors. Getting there on public roads is not covered.
Mowing your lawn your covered, turning around on the road your not. ATV's, UTV's and the like are not covered like a car either. Policy can only cover the one that's on the policy. Unlike my auto, in which case no matter what I drive, rental or other I am covered, but on a atv/utv rental or loaner from a dealer for example is not covered by property, auto or utv policy.

My auto policy covers the liability of the towed vehicle. A towed vehicle cannot carry liability, only fire, theft etc.
Whoever hooks onto a towed vehicle, their liabilty extends to that vehicle

I have a Million $ liability farm policy with FB but would only cover golf cart or tractors at or on my property and not shows. Most at shows have no liability but think they do. Here at home I went with State Farm personal items policy on tractors, trailers ect. and are coverer for a set amount decided on be me and my agent but the golf cart is like a auto policy with comp. and liability. and will cover if stolen as a show so is my trailer.

I believe you are 100% right when you state that people think their covered, but never asked or confirmed if they were. I used to have have a farm policy, had some livestock and was concerned about the liability when or if they got onto the highway. I also had land rented all around the area so was on the road with tractors and some pretty wide equipment. On that policy, liability extended to the rented land, and I had a rider for highway liability as we as for the livestock. The road coverage was a line item, and specified a radius from home. I belive if you haul your tractor to show grounds, your homeowners covers you. Driving on highways and tractor rides, well that's a different animal.

(quoted from post at 14:30:21 04/14/23) I talked to my agent, and they said there is no way they can cover it. I have an umbrella policy, but only covers above my liability policy, and they cannot cover the tractor with a liability plan,,m being it is not a licensed vehicle.
If your agent can't come up with what you want, go see a more competent agent.
One that sells policies for several different companies, not just one.
You might find you can also save big bucks by changing to new company for everything.

JH: It is my understanding that a towed trailer is considered to be automatically covered by the insurance on the tow vehicle, in your case a pickup truck. Not sure though if the trailer has to be plated or not (like a holiday trailer, car hauler, etc). I don't think many hay wagons would be registered and plated. I would recommend asking an agent and if it sounded like it was a done deal, something understandable in writing would be suggested.

I have a farm policy that covers pretty much all of my needs except pulling competitions. Our club has coverage for that. As has been posted sadly many people think that they are covered or just think "I pay the money I must be covered."

Many of the tractor shows requires golf cart or utility to have liability insurance but there are a only a few that
require proof you have it, I carry my SF cards in my billfold. as proof. stats the coverage right on card!

Dumb question:

Are commercial farming operations insured differently than private property and hobbies? I.E. is a farmer driving a tractor between fields treated differently than retiree driving a tractor in an organized tractor drive or to a show? If cash or other prizes are awarded at the show?

You will have to ask your agent the specific questions about what you're doing, the road rides and all. Read the fine print in your policy. If you are not convinced and don't feel satisfied, then ask another company what they cover. I've been with Farm Family Casualty for over 40 years and they will cover practically anything as long as you specifiy the coverage you want and describe the activities.

You just have to ask and don't believe what they tell you till it is in writing. My brother has insurance on his hot rods with one company, while the daily driven stuff is insured by the insurance company his wife works for. Years ago I bought a new trailer and the insurance man told me it was insured by my truck. I asked who was going to pay for my trailer if I hit a bridge with the trailer? His answer was not us! When I told him I wanted All Perils Coverage,That is what you have on your boat and motor if you hit a log, then he finally got what I wanted. Look for a Mutual Insurance Company. Probably will have the name of your county, or one near you in their name. You just have to ask and make sure you are getting what you want.

Don't the tractor clubs that put them on carry insurance? You join the club for the day of the ride and you're covered.

The Mackinac Bridge tractor crossing rules don't say boo about insurance but they do require you belong to a tractor club to make the crossing.

Here's one website that offers tractor club insurance, which includes "cruises."

Shows that I know of require a sticker put on the golf cart or in my case a wheel horse garden tractor. And it is only good for that particular show.
