Extreme Forestry Mulching

Recently had a field cleared of some trees and autumn olives. Had a guy come in with a forestry mulcher - an amazing machine.

The link is some video I took of the forestry mulcher at work.

Forestry Mulcher

I noticed a crew contracted by Duke energy using the mulching machine to clear under the power lines.

Color me unimpressed. Yeah, they're fast, and they save work. But what they leave behind is not "mulch" but rather do-it-yourself obstacle courses.

The power company had one of these things here last year, and now I have stumps all over the place. The pile of debris has been removed, but I still have to brush hog that area because it would kill a mower in the first pass. They promised me no stumps. #@%&*!~ liars.

(quoted from post at 05:22:13 04/13/23) Running into an old piece of machinery in the brush might ruin your day.

Not a forestry mulcher. It'll just bounce off. Maybe lose some teeth. Fortunately it's out in front and you can generally see things before you run over them.

steven allen I am unimpressed also .

five years ago the power company used one on my farm and I stated to them never again . this year was my
rotation for trim work and I made them run everything through a chipper into a box truck and watched them
the entire time . when ask why, I stated to them you never tell the truth

Look up Gyro-trac. They put us out of the brush hogging business. They do beautiful work.

The power line clearing contractors had one of those here a few years back along with their bucket truck, chipper truck etc. They were here by my place several days (heavily wooded area) and they did fantastic work, very neat clearing, well mulched, no mess, still looks great years later. If they left a mess at your place it was a bad crew for sure.

With all the miles of right of way they need to clear, they brought in special equipment and extra laborers to do your section?

What exactly did you expect? They aren't dozers, if you want to follow up with a lawn mower then this isn't the right tool for the job. Stumps being left behind is just the choice of the operator. They can easily grind them below ground level.

? This is in the middle of a national forest, the crew worked in this area for weeks. Expand out to like a 5 mile radius and they were working here for months.

I don't know why they're able to call it ''Forestry Mulching''. This is NOT a forestry practice. It's a land/field clearing practice. The citiotes down the street thought it would make their woodland look park-like. It made it look dirt-like. Now they're planting ornamentals to fill in the dirt spaces, for privacy screening. I'm done with my forestry rant, for now!! steve

I rented one for 5 days to use on our place after we first purchased it. Did a great job. Our intent was to put the area into pasture. If you want a hay field or lawn you need to use something else. The stumps can be ground down to surface level but the wood chips left are too large & too numerous to be able to use the area as lawn or hayfield unless you do additional work. Takes 2-4 years for all the debris to degrade & incorporate into the soil.
Only downside I ran into was picking up the remains of an old fence that I did not know about. Took about 2 hours, in 100* heat, to cut the barbed wire off the mulcher reel.
