Best way to clean a fuel tank

This is my approach:

Dirty/varnish but basically not rusty,
some good ethanol gas and shake it around
occasionally (cheap) or pressure wash or
have a radiator shop boil it out (more
expensive). If it cleans up well and
doesn't look bad inside, then I would not
line it. I've seen more bad jobs than
good.

If rusty, a couple handfuls of random
hardware or chain and then attach it to
something that spins slowly (a rear
tractor tire and then take it for a
drive), a stationary cement mixer, etc.
This is the cheap option. More expensive
is a radiator shop that would cut it open,
and blast it and weld it back together.
More than likely if you blast/hardware
clean it, it'll need a liner. Follow the
instructions to a T.

my usual procedure;

let it dry out

put in a handful of nuts and bolts

put the cap on and cork the output

ratchet strap it to the wheel center of another tractor and drive it around a while letting it rotate with the wheel

empty it, blow it out good with compressed air

plug it back up and pour in a gallon of muriatic acid (wear proper gloves, and safety glasses0 slosh it around good to etch

rinse THOROUGHLY with water

place fill hole over tailpipe of a running car/truck to dry (it will get warm

blow out again

pour in some KREME brand sealer and slosh around until all coated, you can see most of it with a light through one hole or the other

once coated drain excess KREME back into the can for future use

allow to dry...

I have some that were done like that over 25 years ago that are still great

On the same subject, how about a large rectangular 4x6-ish 100gal+ diesel tank? Thinking put like 10 gal diesel in and rock back and forth over a center support see-saw style then drain and repeat a few times. Has like a 1/2" drain port in one bottom corner.

Not rusty, just accumulated dirt/crud on the bottom I'd like to get out. Perhaps it's not that important and if I just add an extra pre-filter for peace of mind it will be just fine. Thoughts?

I always removed all fittings including the cap and took it to the car wash. You can pretty
well hit all the inner surface by spraying in the fill orifice and the port in the bottom.
You can slop most of the water out, get the rest with a tea-towel, then slosh a dab of
diesel around in it to resist rust. I usually put some HEAT in the initial gas feed. This
worked well on ones that weren't terrible. gm

I washed a 500 gallon out in summer heat with water hose, then soap and more water, then some diesel fuel. Maybe a gallon, then after all drained let set in a hot sun for a day then put to use if it looks good inside if not then either replace tank or open and weld up then close.
